We honor the life and memory of Anthony J. “Tony” Leggett, whose contributions transformed our understanding of physics.

His pioneering work on the theory of superconductors and superfluids earned him the 2003 Nobel Prize in physics.

A beloved Illinois teacher and colleague, Tony inspired generations through his curiosity and humility.

His legacy lives on through his work and the people he inspired.

At the inaugural Quantum Discovery Camp, 22 high school students explored quantum science through hands-on workshops, lab demonstrations and an escape room challenge.

Hosted by IQUIST with the IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute through Grainger Engineering’s WYSE summer programs, the weeklong camp connected students with Illinois researchers and potential career paths.

“We wanted to expose students to real-world applications and career pathways, both in academia and in industry,” said Michael Smith, IQUIST’s education and outreach coordinator.

After the camp, 16 participants ranked Illinois as their top college choice, and one sought resources to start a quantum club at their school.

What do imitation diamonds, material defects and europium crystals have in common?

They could all help advance the next generation of quantum technology.

Grainger Gngineering researchers Chris Anderson, Angela Kou, Elizabeth Goldschmidt and Daniel Shoemaker are developing materials to connect quantum devices, improve superconducting qubits and store quantum information.

Swipe to explore their research, then read the full story at the link in our bio.

For the 13th year straight, a team from U of I was selected to present their space mission design at NASA’s annual Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts – Academic Linkage competition.

RASC-AL is a NASA competition team that develops the entire, big-picture, systems-level mission design. This year’s mission was to develop lunar technologies that leverage materials available on the moon.

The team was made up of students from 13 disciplines – nine Grainger Engineering departments including aerospace, chemical, electrical, physics, civil, systems, nuclear, mechanical and computer engineering. Students from other units on campus came from astronomy, data science, mathematics and astrophysics.

The team developed MATRIX – Mining and Advanced Transformation of Regolith for Infrastructure and eXpansion and tied for the Best Prototype Award.

“It was the workhorse of our architecture because everything we were developing needed size-sorted regolith. It uses vibrations to make the larger particles sort up and smaller particles sort down. We were able to sort a spoonful of regolith in a couple seconds into four different size groups, which is insanely fast,” said team lead Hannah Speranza.

University press of Kentucky:

“We’re delighted to share this stunning cover design for Amy Hassinger’s forthcoming memoir, APOCALYPSE IN BLUE: ON BETRAYAL, FAILURE, FORGIVENESS, AND JAZZ.

Blending memoir, jazz, philosophy, and cultural history, APOCALYPSE IN BLUE is a lyrical meditation on despair, improvisation, resilience, and finding joy amid uncertainty. Inspired by the music of legends like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Keith Jarrett, and Cassandra Wilson, Hassinger explores how learning to improvise became a practice of healing and self-acceptance.

Coming Soon—Stay tuned for more! 🎹 https://buff.ly/lQYgt5s”

Let's celebrate! Several amazing LAS undergraduate students have been awarded prominent scholarships this spring:

🏆 Sameer Abbasi and Lyndon Shi have received Boren Awards. This is the 11th consecutive year that at least one Illinois student has earned this scholarship!

🏆 Di Lan Johnson, Christine Nguyen, and Karel Pene (now a two-time CLS recipient!) were awarded U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships.

🏆 George Bayliss was awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Fun fact: no university has had more Goldwater Scholarship recipients —13 — over the past three years than Illinois!

🏆 R. Fisher Houston was awarded the Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, one of only 65 recipients nationwide.

We congratulate these students on their achievements and can't wait to see what they do next! From top left, clockwise: Karel Pene, Lyndon Shi, Sameer Abbasi, and Christine Nguyen

🔸The Illinois Innovation Award recognizes #ILLINOIS students for groundbreaking innovation or translational research with potential for real-world impact. Aidan Andrews receives this year's $20,000 prize from @uofigrainger for building AI agents that automate complex farm management tasks, the core technology behind his startup AgAnswers.ai.

🔹The Fiddler Innovation Fellowship, awarded by the @ncsaatillinois, honors students who address societal or global challenges through an interdisciplinary approach. Hajara-Yasmin Isa receives this year's $10,000 award, presented by the eDream Institute at NCSA, for creating the first programming logic and design textbook in Hausa, opening a door to computing education for tens of millions of speakers across West Africa.

This year's finalists—working on aerial robotics, AI-guided emergency medicine, cancer-targeting biomaterials, nuclear infrastructure monitoring and mastery-based learning—reflect the breadth of impact-driven work happening across campus.

Congratulations to this year's award recipients and finalists! 📲 Click the link in the bio to read more.
