We are grateful to every person who was part of the SOMOS OT project this year. It was truly a labor of love. More than 20 volunteers, 36 interviewees, and many collaborators dedicated months of preparation to put this together, with countless hours reaching out for interviews, organizing the content, designing the videos, coordinating panels...every bit made a difference.

It began with an idea of a single video by Dahlia Castillo and organically grew into a national, multi-state effort after many responded to the call to volunteer and collaborate. I am proud of our SOMOS OTxTODOS team, who worked on this project in between clients, before class started, late at night, and on the weekends. I am honored to have worked alongside every single one of you. Our goal was to connect and strengthen our community by increasing awareness of the stories and work of the Latine/x OT community. Along the way, we developed new friendships, celebrated one another, inspired new ideas, and reached more than 150,000 views on Instagram alone!

Thank you all for being part of the SOMOS OT project this year. We hope you were inspired by the stories shared by many and it has helped you feel connected to the OT community, to something larger than ourselves.

SOMOS OT may be wrapping up, but our community continues year-round. Join TODOS to get involved in current initiatives like the social media campaign, the mentorship program, Manos Unidas quarterly meetings, the Writing Accountability Group (WAG), and the TODOS Juntos series. Who’s going to Boston for AOTA Inspire 2027?! As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, this is not a goodbye or adios... it’s see you in Boston! To help us close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honored to share a special message from AOTA President Arameh Anvarizadeh, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA.

Dr. Anvarizadeh reflects on many of the themes discussed through this year’s SOMOS OT project, including equity, accessibility, representation, and the power of storytelling. She shares AOTA’s commitment to supporting the Hispanic and Latine/x community through advocacy and leadership opportunities that help advance our profession. As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we are honored to share a special message from AOTA Vice President Cristina Reyes Smith, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA.

In her message, Dr. Reyes Smith reflects on how she has experienced cariño throughout her personal and professional life. For many of us, it may be hard to describe cariño, too, but we definitely feel it! It is a warm embrace, a way of seeing others…it’s deeply woven into our culture. It is the warmth that helps people feel welcomed and seen. As occupational therapy practitioners and students, cariño is built into our connection and relationship with others, including our families, clients, colleagues, and the entire OT community. Thank you, Dr. Reyes Smith, for helping us close out Hispanic Heritage Month with this beautiful reminder of warmth and connection.

As we approach the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to thank everyone who has shared their experiences, words of wisdom, as well as their journey into occupational therapy. We see you and we are grateful you are part of this OT family. We recognize the passion and dedication you have poured into this field, and how your cultura continues to strengthen the fabric of the occupational therapy profession.

Today’s message from fellow occupational therapy practitioners and students continue to inspire us, and their words are a reminder of how our cultural identities and experiences are needed within occupational therapy. Let’s keep showing up as our authentic selves and creating spaces where others can do the same.

Meet la familia!

If you’re just joining us, you might be wondering what is #SomosOT?

The Somos OT National Hispanic Storytelling Project is a grassroot initiative that began earlier this year. It brought together Latine/x occupational therapy practitioners and students from across the country at this year’s AOTA Inspire conference in Anaheim, California.

We had the opportunity to meet our OT familia, from the East Coast to the West Coast! Between educational sessions, salsa dance break, and inspirational keynotes, we were able to sit down and interview each other, capturing so many beautiful stories. And throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll be sharing their stories... from what led them to occupational therapy, how their culture influences their practice, advice they have for others, and so many more words of wisdom.

There is so much diversity within the Hispanic community. We have different cultures, backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Yet, we found connection through our shared passion for occupational therapy and our commitment to the people and communities we serve.

So, from coast to coast, ¡conozcan a nuestra familia de OT! 🫶🏽

And if there’s one thing I am reminded of, it’s that conferences can be magical places. They are places where we not only learn and grow, but a place where we can also find community. Make sure to check out your state organization’s website and social media account to learn of your upcoming state conference. If you live in California, we will be celebrating our 50th OTAC Conference anniversary later this year, you don’t want to miss it!

🔹 Emmie Hood, Riley Turner, & Frederika Shero – “Navigating the Return to Work.” Their research dives deep into neurorehabilitation and acute care, focusing on healthcare policy, psychosocial adjustment, and the clinical return-to-work process for newly disabled individuals.
