I truly am overwhelmed with every emotion possible as I finished a degree that was once only a dream. I’ve had this very dream since I was three years old. As I walked across the stage today I felt every single ancestor on my shoulders. Pride and joy fills me knowing I have made every family member, friend, the neighborhood, etc. proud. This degree is for y’all, and every single one of my grandparents who had a front row seat in heaven. This degree is for my beautiful fiancée who believed in me before I knew how to believe in myself. A woman who spent endless nights studying with me, calling me things in car rides to the grocery store, and allowing me to practice on her for hours on end. You helped me earn every bit of this degree and words as simple as thank you could never be enough. For the people who rooted against me, or told me I should reconsider my dream, I’m sorry you couldn’t see it. These last 3.5 years have tested every fiber of my faith and strength, but my God works harder. I beat a lot of odds, and now am apart of a percentage very few can claim. I am a Black Woman with a doctorate degree and NOBODY can take that from me. SN: Black chiropractors make up less than 2% of the entire profession. Yesterday I contributed to increasing diversity within the profession. So please allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Dr. Maya Andréa Mann D.C. Summa Cum Laude. Lasting Purpose Distinction.
