Reflecting on the poem by Irena Klepfisz one section at a time. #onestepatatime👣 “4. A beys-oylem / A cemetery Der moyer the wall oyf der zayt on this side un oyf der zayt and on this side Oyf beyde zaytn on both sides. Oyf der zayt a keyver on this side a grave oyf der zayt a vistenish on this side a wasteland. Der Moyer a beys-oylem oyf der zayt un oyf der zayt. ” Standing between two overwhelming choices. On one side a keyver/a grave. A destroyed past, lost history. On the other side a vistenish/a wasteland. A contemporary world that feels impossibly foreign. My setting features Alicia Svigal’s incredible playing on this piece. She plays a doina (improvised prelude) with the strings supporting. And the sung melody starts in a modal world, similar to the doina. And alternates to a waltz. I’m curious what you hear! Listen to the whole thing at the link in my bio. Reflecting on the poem by Irena Klepfisz one section at a time. #onestepatatime👣 “3. Zi flit / She flies Zi flit vi a foygl like a bird zi flit ibern yam over the sea iber di berg over the mountains. Tsurik tsurik back back zi flit and settles oyf a boym on a tree lebn a moyer near a wall a moyer fun a beys oylem a wall of a cemetery. ” This 3rd section really changes tone. We leave the here and now, the repetition and stuckness. And we fly, through space and time. And memory. This section is where I found my stride for this project. I knew, as a composer, that I wanted to marry the sounds of yiddishkayt (jewishness) with contemporary songwriting and harmony. The text of this poem reaches into the past. “Tsurik tsurik / back back” And musically, that’s also where I pivot into nusakh, into a pseudo cantorial sound. And listening back, there are many times where I hear myself channeling nusakh. Not entirely intentionally! But its there. Reflecting on the poem by Irena Klepfisz one section at a time. #onestepatatime👣 “2. Vider a mol/Once again Vider a mol she tries to rise above circumstances. Too much is at stake this morning Yedn frimorgn every morning to see what can be wrenched from the unconscious crowded darkness fun ir zikorn of her memory. It is there di gantse geshikhte fun folk the entire history of the people. Vider a mol she reaches out and tries to hold clinging like a drowning person to a flimsy plank. Ober der yam is groys but the sea is vast un di velt and the world afile greser even larger afile greser.” What is my role as a musician setting Irena’s poem to new music? Do I try to interpret her words faithfully? Or do I challenge or subvert the text, to offer something else? The answer, of course, is “it depends”. My setting of Vider a mol/Once again offers what may be the biggest divide between the poem’s voice, and my musical interpretation for this project. The poem expresses a repetition, a stuckness and desperation. She knows “It is there” the history lost to genocide is there in the “crowded darkness fun ir zikorn of her memory” but she is barely able to grasp it adrift in the sea. In my setting, I grasp onto the glimmers of hope in the words. I set “Der yam is groys, un di velt afile greser” as a chorus. The sea is vast and the world even larger. The words contain a heaviness, but they also contain a sense wonder. Wonder at the depth of our history. The history contained in this poem, in this poet, and in our collective struggles. So what do you think? How do the words and music work in this case? Tell me on May 30th @ Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn ;-P Title script is from album art by @mollycrabapple. Di rayze aheym / The journey home. Reflecting on the poem by Irena Klepfisz one section at a time. #onestepatatime👣 “1. Der fentster/The window She looks out the window. All is present. The shadows of the past fall elsewhere. This is the wilderness she thinks. And our tongues have become dry the wilderness has dried out our tongues and we have forgotten speech. She looks out the window. All is present.” When I first read the poem Di rayze aheym/The journey home, I projected myself into Irena’s words. Let’s imagine. We look out the window. The past is here with us, but its shadows fall elsewhere. Language eludes us. What is it to be in the place we live, yet not to feel at home? To speak and feel the language as foreign in your mouth? This is a survivor’s experience. This is a refugee’s experience. And it’s a deeply Jewish experience. In Yiddish we say “goles”. Diaspora. גלות “Poland remains undzer heym, our home, no matter how bitter the memories, how filled with disappointment and betrayal. Amerike iz goles, America is exile, a foreign land in which I speak a foreign tongue.” Irena Klepfisz writes in “Oyf keyver oves: Poland, 1983” Published in Dreams of an Insomniac, her book of essays. (“Oyf keyver oves” is an incredible companion piece to Di rayze aheym. It offers another view of the experience that the poem captures.) Irena’s reflections looking out the window feel so incredibly fresh. May her words give us the resolve to create undzer heym, our home, a home for us all here in the places we live. This Pesach, join JFREJ for a D.R.E.A.M.y Seder in the Streets on April 17! Together we’ll time travel out of mitzrayim to the caring, affordable NYC of our dreams. Go to jfrej.org/seder to RSVP! Passover is a retelling of the past. This Pesach, our Seder in the Streets is a condemnation of Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, Donald Trump, and the cruel, cowardly, and corrupt leaders we've suffered under, who want to expand police powers, turn our neighbors over to ICE, prioritize lining their pockets while everyday people struggle to get by. This Pesach is also a chance to tell a story of the DREAMy future we are building: where all New Yorkers – no matter where we came from or how we got here – have housing, can access affordable childcare and home care and gender-affirming care, and can put down roots and build a future. #DontRankEvilAndrewForMayor #Passover #Pesach Artwork by Jett George (@ilovewhatimade)
