Always loved this portrait! From my archive: Singer Ilse Abril @ilseabril @ilseabrilart at the US-Mexico border fence in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico.
Q: How does the U.S.-Mexico border influence your life and your work as an artist ?

A: “Art transcends no matter the country. At the end of the day, we are all human and we shape, express and connect with other people through it. A feeling can never be divided by a border.

I have had the fortune and the luck of being able to sing in 3 countries with different musicians and absolutely different concepts and I can say that what I liked the most is that at the moment of the performance everyone’s having fun, they are all transparent and they just want to share a feeling by playing an instrument and it’s all about passion and talent.

Nobody cares about your nationality, gender, color or religion.”

It's #HispanicHeritageMonth, and in recognition of this diverse community, groups around the city are hosting events and celebrations for audiences of all kinds. Cultural groups here and across the U.S. have also provided reading lists, teaching guides, and other resources to explore the rich history and culture of this community more deeply.

Check out our Twitter thread of Hispanic Heritage Month events at the link in our bio.

Our list includes @NYCParks’ new exhibition, “Las Flores de mi País” (“The Flowers of my Country”), now on view at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park. The exhibition features artworks by more than 20 artists that explore interpretations of #Latinx culture with imagery of native flora.
