Generational shifts have been a standard part of the business cycle since the industry professionalized in the late 1800s. This evolution centered on Lyle Tuttle and Dave Yurkew organizing the first official convention in 1976. The core dynamic remains the same. Time moves on, and a new wave of tattooers has already emerged.

@sullen__art served as the main @goldenstatetattooexpo sponsor, with their own Big Hoon entertaining on and off stage as the official MC. Renowned tattoo hosts @carlostorresart and @nikkohurtado also joined as usual.

The venue featured realism pioneer Boris and Asian tattooing expert Jess Yen, each bringing 34 years of experience. Kashu Horishin (20 years) displayed his skills using traditional Tebori technique and machine.

Next came people with more than two decades of experience: Aries Rhysing and Po Zhang. Then the group with 14 to 16 years of experience: Q (NonfromSeoul), Oliver Kenton, Nathan Mould, Mitch Koch, and Deanna James. Another group included individuals with 9 to 12 years of experience: John Hudic (The Raven and The Wolves), who won 1st Place for “Best Cover-Up”; Freddie Albrighton; Johan “Artss” Castillo; and Mammon and Timor (Ganga LA).

The lineup included several artists from Scene360’s past editorials: Denis Torikashvili (29 years of experience), who won First Place for “Best Chest or Back Piece” over the weekend; Ilya Cascad (13 years); BK; Swani; ShiRyu; Dino; Basil; and Solar.

One tattoo helped change the direction of Ilya Cascad Kandaurov's career.

In this clip from Untitled Interview, Las Vegas tattoo artist Ilya Cascad Kandaurov explains how he experimented with different tattoo styles before discovering ornamental tattooing.

After posting one of his early ornamental pieces online, a major tattoo community shared his work—and suddenly he was receiving messages and gaining thousands of followers.

That reaction helped convince Ilya and his wife that he'd found the style he needed to pursue. Today, Ilya specializes in ornamental, geometric and dotwork tattooing and owns Ornamental.ink with his wife Naira Kandaurov, in Las Vegas.

His work has earned more than 30 placements at tattoo competitions around the world.

Full interview with Ilya Cascad Kandaurov and Naira Kandaurov out on Untitled Interview YouTube Channel next week.

What happens when art stops sitting on the body and starts becoming part of it?

For Ilya Cascad Kandaurov, the answer is an ever-evolving exploration of ornament, anatomy, movement, and illusion.

What began with an unexpected stop in Las Vegas became home — and the birthplace of @ornamentalika

Now, through Project Decay, Ilya is pushing his work even further, exploring how tattoo art can transform, move, and become something entirely unexpected.

Meet the artist behind the ink on influence.vegas.
