3 years ago I was a person that I didn’t recognize, I struggled with mental illness, turned to alcohol and became an alcoholic and medically depressed. Tried to take my own life, but through boxing, I am living again. This time around it’s about enjoying life and making every day count. Conversations around mental health and the pregnancy journey are not always easy, but they are necessary and because of you, they were powerful.

If you’re wondering if I have a favorite piece in my new Hoop Dreams collection, it’s this one right here. It’s the first canvas I worked on in the collection.

When the year started, I wrote down some goals and one of them was to create a series of 4 canvas works. When I approached this collection, I had that in mind as well as incorporating acrylic paint + modeling paste (which I started using this year), focusing on repetition in the work, adding a lot of different colors and vibrancy, and adding different elements to create a texture on the base of the canvas.

If you could see these works up close, you would notice the texture immediately. I purposely created a gritty texture because of the gritty energy you had to play with if you’re hooping in Philly. I was a small guard, so I always had to play with a chip on my shoulder. You can’t hoop in Philly and be soft.

I’m from Philly where it get gritty at, so I used that to my advantage and put it on a canvas.
