A play studio for art and design. We turn play into a method for encounter, inquiry & collective imagination with brands & institutions.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Play allows us to rehearse change and conceive new possibilities. It doesn’t equate gamification, it’s something entirely unruly.
⁣
Protein spoke with the founders of art and design studio @imaginationofthings about their philosophy of play as permission and how, the most fruitful play often involves friction, theatre and challenge. It’s not all fun and games.

It's finally here . . . . . . . . . . . .

The 2025 Futures Lab Journal is now available, and would not be possible without the contributions from all involved over the last 12 months and longer, thanks for your commitment and passion to help shape a brighter and more resilient future.

The Futures Lab was established to create space, not for prediction, but
for possibility. From the beginning, it has resisted the idea that the future
is something to be forecast, optimised, or delivered on schedule. Instead,
it treats the future as something that must be considered: collectively,
critically, and with care.

In its second year, under the theme 'Abundance & Scarcity' Futures Lab
moves with greater intention. The work gathered in this journal reflects
a shift from exploration to composition: from asking whether alternative
futures are possible, to examining how they might be practiced. Rather than
standing at a distance from complexity, Futures Lab now works inside it,
convening diverse voices, staging speculative worlds, and using creativity as
a way to slow down, surface tensions, and "make space for meaning".

DM if you would like a copy of the Journal.

Introducing our t2025 Partners.

Meet @imaginationofthings.
Based in Amsterdam and co-founded by Vitor Freire and Monique Grimord, the studio creates games, installations and participatory experiences that invite people to explore alternative ways of living, relating and organising.

Their playful, experiential approach makes them an ideal partner for "Gaming the System", a brief that imagines the future of learning as immersive, relational and continuous.

Futures Lab Strategic Director Rosanna:

"It goes without saying that Imagination of Things work is always great fun. But something runs much deeper here - their studio has built an entire design philosophy around the power of play. From working with playful digital tools that help us imagine new futures, through to teaching play as a creative methodology, the breadth of their repertoire was perfect for this brief. And ideal for the exploration we encourage through Futures Lab. We knew we had to have them on board."

We’re excited to see how Imagination of Things bring curiosity, care and collaboration to this exploration.

🎮PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT! 🎮 @imaginationofthings @unimaginablered ✨media artwork ✨📍 Sint Annenstraat 18 | Street Arts Festival in the Red Light District! Sunday, April 13th, 2025 | 13:00-18:00 | Sint Annenstraat | Straat vol Kunst

“At the festival, we are presenting a taste of the game world as a media artwork taking over the space.”

Imagination of Things is a creative studio based in Amsterdam that blends artistic inquiry, emerging technology, and a game mindset to reimagine how culture, identity, and social systems can be experienced and transformed. Their work is defined by a commitment to playful worldbuilding as a method for critical engagement and collective imagination.

Their artistic game Unimaginable Red is inspired by pleasure activism, stories and heritage of social movements in Amsterdam. It reimagines the Red Light District into a parallel reality: an autonomous island with its own pleasure economy, shaped by a coalition of pleasure guardians—fetish gardeners, self-care gurus, ravers, and dominatrix patrols—who rebelled against oppression and redefined their world.

This whimsical yet subversive game world invites players to engage with surreal, playful interactions and rethink the meaning of autonomy, connection, and pleasure. The project has been developed in collaboration with a group that included trans and queer activists, sex workers, architects, heritage experts, and residents.

Together with the first year of iArts we dove into the topic of Pleasure. We examined the ways joy, desire, and indulgence shape our experiences and emotions. Year 1 and Year 2 invite you to reflect on the many facets of pleasure and how it connects us to ourselves and the world around us.

What is your pleasure? Come find out ;)
