this is an ode to Black women. a celebration of who we are and who we are becoming. I hope you join me to celebrate ourselves and be witnessed amongst each other. the world tends to overlook us, this space is designed for us to be SEEN. to be CELEBRATED and HONORED. to be HEARD.

Spend Sunday July 19th with us as we continue celebrating Sundiata with a day of workshops✨

On Sunday, July 19, we’re offering four workshops led by incredible artists, educators, and culture bearers, each designed to deepen your connection to the epic of Sundiata and the legacy of the Mali Empire.

🎶 10:15 - 11:00 AM Kora History & Sound Bath with Amadou Kouyate
 Learn about the history and significance of the kora from a member of the renowned Kouyate Diali lineage before settling into a restorative live sound bath. Bring a yoga mat, blanket, journal, or anything that helps you relax and receive.

👧🏾 11:15 AM - 12:00 PM Children’s Sundiata Read Along and Dance Workshop with Imani Amos
 Young learners will explore the story of Sundiata through storytelling, music, and movement inspired by the traditions of the ancient Mali Empire.

🔥11:30 - 12:45 PM Traditional West African Dance with special guest Zenzile Pearson
 Experience traditional West African dance with one of Chicago’s phenomenal dance artists.

✨ 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Traditional West African Dance with our Artistic Directors Diadie Bathily and Rokya Ouattara!

We’ll end the day together with a class that brings everything full circle with Afriky Lolo’s leading directors and the choreographers for our Sundiata Production!

As my solo exhibition RED, BLACK, & GREEN approaches its final weekend on view @mocada_museum ( today -Sunday April 26th) I thought I should finally piece together this footage @imanimoon captured from the opening. Huge thanks to @missaimstar and MoCADA for making this possible! You are true cultural stewards who care about artists! Thanks you to @chelseyalexandrea @alexcarterbrand for yet another beautiful custom up-cycled piece for my opening. You are the goat and I love you and this gown! Thank you so much to my friends and family for pulling up to support! The last few years have been hard for me, but your love inflates my heart so I can stay afloat. Thank you to everyone who has gone to see the show. The feedback really warms my heart. A lot more to post, y’all gon be sick of me 🥹

Couldn’t let the Day pass without acknowledging the 10 year anniversary of my first solo exhibition BRAIDS. This body of work was the first time I combined my lifelong braiding talent with my photography and overall creative vision. Tremendous thanks to all my models for being a huge part of my dream! Thank you to @3artschicago for helping me fund this project. Thank you to kylelamere for letting me use your equipment and studio when I did not have my own. Thanks @imanimoon for modeling, doing make up, spraying models with oil sheen, and so many things that made this possible! Thank you to my family, friends, and supporters for the love! Thank you to my collectors for showing me there was a sustainable(ish) future in pursuing my passion. Time really flies, and when I zoom out, it’s impossible not to see the cultural impact my creative contributions have had. Amazing how a pure offering of love can change your life.
