I remember watching the ‘Girls Like Girls’ music video when it first came out in 2015. Then watching that story grow into a novel, and now, more than a decade later, a feature film. So getting to sit with @hayleykiyoko at an intimate brunch and hear first-hand about that journey felt incredibly meaningful 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩

I think it’s beautiful when a queer story is given the chance to keep growing. A song became a music video, the story became a book, and now, a film. Behind that seemingly simple trajectory are years of persistence, setbacks, pitching, rewriting, finding the right people, protecting the heart of the story, and continuing to believe that it deserves to exist.

That tenacity is something so many queer creatives can recognise. A lot of our work exists because we refuse to give up. And that’s why films like ‘Girls Like Girls’ matter so much. Queer girls and sapphic young people deserve coming-of-age films where they get to be messy, tender, joyful, confused, in love and, importantly, at the centre of their own stories.

I love that we were brought together with so much care and intention, you could sense that this wasn’t just another ‘promo event/activation’. Hayley sat with us, spoke openly about the process and journey behind the film, and we got to connect with other people who are creating, championing, and amplifying queer stories in their own ways.

A huge thank you to @wdment for making this happen ❤️

@girlslikegirlsfilm is out in UK cinemas this Friday, 2 October.
