On ICE flights, detainees are treated like human cargo, shuffled across the country to different states strictly based on bed space at detention camps before deportation. Once on board, people are locked in handcuffs, waist chains, and leg irons with absolute zero clue about where they are being taken. It is a deliberate tactic that makes it nearly impossible for them to contact their families or reach an attorney before they vanish into another facility. To make matters worse, these flights completely ignore basic safety standards. The FAA requires that any plane be capable of being completely evacuated in 90 seconds or less during an emergency. But when you have human beings completely shackled to their seats, escaping in time is almost impossible turning what should be a safety protocol into a life threatening trap.

ICE is now deporting people to Tulum, marking a grim shift in removal operations flying deportees further and further away from the US/Mexico border. While Tulum is globally known as an expensive luxury tourist destination, it is situated in Mexico’s far south hundreds of miles away from the US/Mexico border and far from central Mexico. In Dallas, I have observed two to three direct ICE flights heading to Tulum every month. Detainees board these flights with little to no awareness of where they are being taken to. Because they are transferred straight from detention centers across the US, most arrive with zero belongings, no phone, no money, and no wallet. The majority of personal property held during detention is lost, stolen, or never returned upon deportation. Once they land in Tulum, the ordeal continues. Detainees are immediately put on a grueling 2 hour bus ride down to Cancun, the furthest southern point leaving them stranded in an expensive region with no resources. Furthermore, the bus fares required to travel back north towards central Mexican cities are prohibitively expensive for someone who has just been stripped of everything. Leaving vulnerable people stranded with nothing in a high cost tourist hub is completely unacceptable.

Today we protested right outside the Signature Aviation headquarters in Dallas to call them out for colluding with ICE and letting their ramp space be used for domestic shuffle flights and deportation flights. It is completely sickening and inhumane. People are put onto these flights not knowing where they are being taken to, let alone that they are shackled and restrained almost across the whole body. It’s an accident or emergency waiting to happen—because there is no way ICE or private security guards could ever evacuate all of those shackled detainees out in 90 seconds or less if something went wrong. These human beings are treated like criminals all because of needed paperwork to be in this country. We are all the same people no matter what. Signature Aviation can’t hide behind being a “neutral” business when they’re actively cashing in on human rights abuses and tearing families apart. Corporate profits should never come before human lives, and we’re not stopping until they cut ties with ICE completely. #abolishice #noloveforiceair #signatureaviation #stopdeportations #humanrights

CORRECTION: We’re being told it’s likely agents misreported the incident (because of course they did 🙄) and the medical emergency was something other than a seizure. Regardless, we just hope this man is okay. 2:46 today (8/21): A detained person was being shackled to be boarded onto a deportation flight at @dallaslovefield when he had a seizure and was put in an ambulance to be sent to Parkland Hospital. BBQ8254 is nearly to Tulum, MX now. Our spotter was there. We have alerted the media, a congressional, and city council members. #reels #fyp #dallas #lovefield #ice

The Department of Homeland Security Paid $464 Million for 6 ex-Avelo Airlines 737-700s for deportation flights. Then it parked them and were never used. Our taxpayer dollars are going towards stupid shit like this when these planes aren’t even needed for ICE flights. What a waste of money and needed planes that could be given to airlines for their passenger flights Daedalus Aviation Corporation, a government defense and charter contractor formed in Virginia, stepped in specifically to facilitate this fleet acquisition. Because major commercial carriers like Avelo faced public boycotts, union backlash, and local political pressure over operating deportation flights, Daedalus acted as an intermediary to take over the aircraft’s. Operating strictly as a private government contractor without a public facing passenger brand, Daedalus remains completely immune to commercial consumer pressure.  While the baseline procurement deal was originally structured around $140 million for the 737-700s, the program’s budget rapidly expanded to $464 million under emergency no-bid contracting exemptions. Beyond acquiring the narrow body jetliners, Daedalus’s scope expanded to cover long-term fleet integration, support operations, and additional executive transport airframes.  Rather than immediately flying deportation missions, Daedalus ended up positioning the aircraft into long-term storage, with multiple jets sitting idle on domestic tarmacs. Daedalus cited the need for technical maintenance checks, cabin reconfigurations, and specialized avionics retrofits required to transition commercial airframes into dedicated agency transports. However, internal oversight revealed that DHS and it’s contractors lacked the certified flight crews, ground support contracts, and flight dispatch infrastructure necessary to actually operate a standalone airline. As a result, hundreds of millions of public dollars were spent pulling active passenger aircraft out of commercial supply chains, only to let them gather dust on regional airport ramps.
