Have you ever heard of or listened to Esquivel? I hadn’t until recently. He was huge in the US in the 50’s-60’s. Kinda hard to describe but Bossa nova with a weird poppy SciFi vibe to it. A bit (a lot) cheesy but weirdly addictive. Other Words Other Sounds is a good one 🎶 I’ve always had a bit of a thing for Bossa nova. I think it comes from when my aunt Carol tried to teach me how to play the organ in the 70’s-80’s and I loved the Bossa nova preset. She lived in Ancoats MCR. I’d visit at weekends. She tried to get me into ballroom dancing! If I’d have opened my eyes I’d have realised that it was a great way to meet gorgeous girls 👧 The YouTube video is “Loie” by Ike Quebec (Bossa Nova Soul Samba from @imhardforhardbop channel. My sunflower finally flowered! I thought it wouldn’t make it before autumn arrived😊

New Jazz Vinyl Challenge courtesy of @imhardforhardbop and @amanandhismusic - this one’s pretty interesting too: #locallegendsjazzchallenge thinking of people to choose from I kind of have a lot of options seeing as I was born and raised in Los Angeles, which frankly has no shortage of great artists, and my initial thought was to choose a Billy Higgins album (I recently picked up a very cool one) but I opted for this recently acquired Eric Dolphy live release. Eric Dolphy is particularly relevant to this since we actually went to the same college! Los Angeles City College, though just a community college, some of the most interesting and formative classes I’ve ever taken were at LACC, and the fact that Eric Dolphy went there made me very proud to attend at the time. So he’s definitely a legend to me and in my personal jazz-discovering journey. Aside from the man himself, this album is very interesting for a couple reasons (I meant to post it anyways so this challenge is very fortuitous.). Firstly, it’s one of the many live releases by Dolphy on Prestige from the early 60’s, both sides are single tracks that take up the whole side, yet remain incredibly interesting and captivating throughout, thanks in no small part to the amazing lineup of Mal Waldron - Booker Little - Richard Davis and Ed Blackwell (plus Dolphy himself of course). Furthermore, this pressing was interesting to me, 2nd press released 2 years after the first, Blue Trident label RVG stamped, it goes for literally 1/4th the price of an original! Chances are it sounds incredibly similar (which is great, thank you Rudy Van Gelder), yet the price differential between the 1st and 2nd is absurd! Pick up this copy if you see it! I believe there are a couple still on Discogs, if you have this on your wantlist, do your wallet a favor and opt for a Blue Trident copy! I look forward to seeing other submissions for this challenge! Thanks for starting it Ryan and Donovan! #ericdolphy #prestigerecords #locallegendsjazzchallenge #jazzvinylcommunity #jazzrecords #jazzrecordcollector #jazzrecordcollection #jazzvinylcollection #jazzvinyllovers #postbop #freejazz #avantgarde #vinylcommunity #vinylcommunitypost
