CIM Marathon: 2:58:03
2.5 years post heart surgery.

A little over a year ago I ran my first Marathon. Everything about that experience made me fall in love with running even more. The people, the workouts, the community, the persistence and dedication. I ended up running it in 3 hours and 38 minutes. As mentioned in my LAM2021 post, the job wasn’t finished. I should also mention, that for a good part of that race I was running with @oscar.r.tellez before I crashed and couldn’t keep up.

Fast forward to CIM 2022.

I trained extremely hard with @cnapolitano10 and put so much of my heart into getting into Boston. “No sleep till Boston” we would sing as we climbed the 500 ft hill on our trail runs. The brutal training schedule and logged miles we were putting in ensured us that BQ we wanted was inevitable. We were ready.

I decided I would go for my BQ in Long Beach, but then I got Covid which had other devastating repercussions to go with it. I then signed up for a race in Ventura, thinking if I got my sub 3 there, I wouldn’t have the “all or nothing” mentality going into CIM. I ran the Surfers point marathon in 3 hours and 1 minute. It was equally hilarious and frustrating. I remember calling Christian, laughing and talking about how we would at least get to both sub 3 at CIM together. 3 weeks before our flights, Christian found himself with a calf strain that left him unable to race. Once again, something seemed to be going wrong.

The new plan was to run with Oscar as much as I could, and let him take off when he started to dial in. I remember about 2 miles in telling him that we had to dedicate this run to Christian who we would see at bravo zone at mile 21. 19 miles felt like a million.

Bravo zone was everything I fought for on those 19 miles. Seeing so many of my friends and people I worked so hard with to get here gave me so much pain relief. It was time to run with my heart.

Oscar stuck with me to the very very end. From the warning signs of crashing at mile 9, to the relief that was the “Mile 25” sign. This time, I didn’t crash. I finally got my sub 3.
@cnapolitano10 yours is coming soon.

Also, yes my nipples were bleeding. 😂
