🎧“A Vulnerable Cipher” - SLJ

$The Correspondent is, quite simply, a work of art, both on the page and in performance. Through letters, we slowly come to know Sybil and her gloriously messy family. She made me laugh with her stubbornness, passions and righteous outrage, and every so often I caught a glimpse of my own mum in her: the unquestioned expert on absolutely everything. At its heart, though, this is a book about grief, which is really a book about love. It explores grief in so many forms: the grief of death, fractured relationships, the life we dreamed of, guilt and regret, struggling to find your place in the world, grief that is new, grief that has been hidden, and grief so old it has simply become part of you. It captures with brutal honesty the fact that some grief never really leaves. I suspected from early on where this story would eventually take me, and somehow that did absolutely nothing to protect me. When it arrived, I was beside myself sobbing, which is a feat in itself because tears do not come easily for me. I usually shy away from books marketed as “this will make you cry”. Books are often my escape from my own sadness and grief. But this one was different. It felt raw rather than manufactured fiction, tender rather than tragic for tragedy’s sake. It left a scar on my heart, or perhaps it simply gave words and voices to scars that were already there. Either way, I felt seen. And amongst all that ache, it also made me smile, laugh out loud and fall in love with these deeply flawed, complicated, very human characters. The audiobook makes an already remarkable novel something extraordinary. The multicast duet production gives each correspondent a distinct voice and emotional life, and I genuinely appreciate the time, care and investment that went into assembling such an incredible cast. Some books I recommend reading. This one? Listen to it. 🎧 Narrated by Maggi-Meg Reed, Jane Oppenheimer, Carly Robins, Jeff Ebner, David Pittu, Chris Andrew Ciulla, Mark Bramhall, Petrea Burchard, Robert Petkoff, Kimberly Farr, Cerris Morgan-Meyer, Peter Ganim and Jade Wheeler. #thecorrespondent #epistolary #multicastaudiobook #audiobookreview$
