During a moment at the Tour de Murrieta, in the middle of a very intense race, I had a realization that came over me. As I glanced around, I saw numerous teams moving together as one cohesive unit. However, what truly struck me was the reflection of myself in every Black rider within the pack. In my 32 years of racing, spanning across international, domestic, and local circuits, I had never experienced such a thing. Yes, I’ve had Black teammates and raced against Black cyclists, but those instances were few and far between. So right after the race I gathered them all to take this picture.

In that moment, I knew I had to seize the opportunity and capture a photograph of all the incredible individuals out there representing. Despite the varying team jerseys and allegiances, there was an undeniable bond that should always bring us together.  We may not be wearing the same colors or riding for the same sponsors, but in that shared moment on the road, we were undeniably on the same team. United by the color of our skin and the shared daily struggles of being Black men in this society, we still exhibit our passion for cycling, camaraderie, and the thrill of competition.

This was a powerful reminder of the unifying spirit of the cycling community, regardless of your color or creed.

3 days in LA taught me two things: 1. My fitness is mediocre at best. 2. I never wanna ride on Chicagoland roads again. Thank you to everyone who helped make my trip fantastic. Super grateful to have such gracious friends while meeting new ones along the way.
