In honor of his birthday May 28, 1948, on exhibit will be several pieces of original art by Tomata du Plenty, lead singer of the pioneering LA based synth punk band, The Screamers. Tomata du Plenty was also a prolific artist and produced hundreds of works of art up until his passing in 2000. These are from the collection of Immanuel Martin who purchased them directly from Tomata in the late 1980s in Los Angeles. Immanuel has this to say about the artwork: “Tomata was a friend of my mom, Priscilla Hazlewood. She knew him from the underground art & music scene of 1980s LA. I got to meet him a couple of times through her and on one of those occasions he was selling some of his art before his move to Miami, Florida. He was such a kind sweet man in person. A very stark contrast to his stage presence when performing with The Screamers. I picked out a few pieces that I could afford and have kept them ever since. My mom also had a large collection of his art which she treasured and displayed prominently in her home. Along with the artwork there are several letters that Tomata wrote to my mom included and a flyer for an AIDS benefit. AIDS was a constant presence at that time in LA and we lost many friends to the disease. Sadly we would lose Tomata far too young in 2000. I'm glad that people will be able to see these works by Tomata and keep his memory alive.”
