k.d. lang is literally the coolest person and best singer in the entire world, and I was so proud to play bass in the house band celebrating her at k.d. lang Has Always Been at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa last week.

An honour, a dream, and a career highlight for us all to accompany so many incredible artists who came together to celebrate k.d. and her extraordinary career.

The house band was myself, Davide Di Renzo, @mattkelly250, @donnagrantis , @kendelcarson , and Kelsey McNulty, led by the incomparable, beautiful and wonderful person that is @hillkourkoutis . Thank you, Hill, for being such a fantastic MD and for bringing the whole thing together so beautifully. Thank you for the gig.

It was also so special to see so many friends and familiar faces throughout the week, both onstage and off.

One of my favourite parts was bringing my kids along for the week, coming to work with me, attending the concert, staying at the Château Laurier, and seeing their mom do what she does. I’m so grateful to be able to share these experiences with them.

And none of that happens without my best friend, my “wife for life,” Katie Mattiuz. Thank you for being the behind-the-scenes hero who makes it all possible, all the time. I love you.

Such an incredible celebration of k.d., and truly one of the highlights of my career.

Happy 5th birthday to the beautiful princess of the birdies!!!!!!!

Billie is the nicest most caring person, and the most loving sibling to her sister and brother who will learn so much from the way she sees the world, especially as they get older. She’s my psychic baby, my musical baby, my ‘weird’ baby, and she is, objectively, absolutely adorable in every way and I cannot explain how grateful to the universe I am for allowing me be her mummy.

You’re only 5 but you’ve been here the whole time.

Happy EIGHTH birthday to my first child, Leni.

The world doesn’t need me to list the reasons why I love Leni, because a mother’s love knows no bounds. But because I am so proud, I will share a few truths:

Leni is wildly intelligent. Like many children with younger siblings, she has learned to be both patient and kind, but with a sharp, dark sense of humour that comes from growing up between two blended families. Leni is brave. She has travelled the world, switched schools three times, gone on the road with bands, and still leans toward adventure every time, having learned to ground herself in everything she does.

Leni does math for fun, writes her own comic books, researches alternative history (like her mom), and creates satirical folk songs through an alter ego, an exuberant British penny collector named Gerald.

Please wish Leni a happy birthday. She might be the coolest kid alive 💛

Today is my 25-year-old nanny’s 40th birthday. If I was (insert name of ANY famous male actor) I would have left my wife for this woman, because she’s perfect in every way. She helps Jud and I raise our kids as if they are her own (They are! They just are!) but is also my best friend in the entire god damned world. I love you Katie! #NANNY @immikemavis

Billie turned 4 this weekend but I thought she’d been here longer! I honestly don’t remember what anything was before she arrived. My middle child is the most beautiful, hilarious, and fascinating (terrifying?) little being on earth.

I spend so much time away working that I’m always thinking about my kids — who they are, what they might become, and how I can be a better mom for them (besides actually being home sometimes… 🙃).

For now I will slow down and remember that Billie is just a Pink Princess who is also a tropical bird with extremely fancy feathers, and that brushing her hair is impossible (birds don’t have hair). Hopefully she stays this way for a while.
