Today we honour our national and everyday heroes…

Rest in peace, Johnny, Albert, Brutus, Powder. 🕊️ @jollyboysmusic

The Jolly Boys taught me that mento isn't just a genre — it's the heartbeat of Jamaican music. From ska to reggae to dancehall, it all traces back to what they've been playing since 1945.

I had the honor of co-producing their breakout album Great Expectations and touring the world with them. Working with Albert in the studio was a masterclass — not just in production, but in culture, storytelling, and respect for the craft. They taught me as much as I taught them, and I carry those lessons into every session.

In the spirit of their legacy, I'm continuing what they didn't get to finish. The work goes on. 🙏🏾

We decided to release “Day-O” performed by @jollyboysmusic and Nexus as a tribute to the late Harry Belafonte and Albert, Johnny and Powda who left this earth too soon.

I feel bitter sweet about this release as we had such an unbelievable journey with the boys. From when they used to perform in the Bushbar to when my dear friend and music producer, Mark Jones of Wall of Sound decided to take them into the studio and create a modern Mento album.

The album “Great Expectations” featured a The Jolly Boy’s unique take on modern contemporary songs with Mento instrumentation. The first song we recorded in this style was Amy Winehouse’s hit, Rehab which went viral in 2009 - the rest is history!

From this, they began travelling the world including supporting an artist I worked with during my early 20s - Sade on her 2010 O2 Tour.

This clip shows some highlights of the many experiences we had together, in loving memory of these, not only great characters but ambassadors from Jamaica.

💔 Today, we bid farewell to the legendary Harry Belafonte, whose powerful voice and captivating charisma have left an indelible mark on music history. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his legacy, including the iconic song “Day-O.” 🎶 The Jolly Boys, despite the loss of our older members, continue to honor the vibrant spirit of Jamaican music. In memory of Belafonte, keep an eye out for the Jolly Boys’ heartfelt rendition of “Day-O,” as we carry his legacy forward. Rest in peace, Harry Belafonte. You will always be remembered. 🕊️ #HarryBelafonte #DayO #JollyBoys #GeejamMusic #RIPHarryBelafonte
