Akhil Kantipuly, an MPH student in the department of Community Health and Prevention at Dornsife, used his analytical and storytelling abilities to support @ImpactServices, a nonprofit serving veterans. 📍 Visit the link in our bio to learn more about his work and check out his short documentary that takes you through a day-in-the-life of a veteran, father, and artist from Philadelphia who experienced homelessness before utilizing Impact Services.

In our January issue, Finding Life After Service, veterans shared their experiences accessing benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). For some veterans, the VA benefits system is filled with obstacles including distrust for the government.
.
It took John Tomys, a Vietnam veteran who now lives in Impact Services’ Hancock Manor veterans' housing facility, more than 30 years to reach out to the institution he swore off. In Kensington, veterans can access their benefits through community organizations partnered with the VA.
.
Robert, a veteran and jack-of-all-trades at The Last Stop, doesn't use VA benefits. Community organizations, like The Last Stop, provide veterans with a safe space outside of the VA system.

John Zerbe, an artist and friend of KV, is working on a mural he is collaborating on with Kien Nguyen at Impact Service’s ‘124’ veterans housing facility. He sat down with Zari Tarazona (for her first piece as part of the KV team that she pulled together in 24 hours🔥) for a q&a about this project as well as his own experiences as a veteran. .
.
“Being a veteran myself, I think a lot of people don’t realize what veterans do. Without the military, we wouldn’t have our rights. A lot of times, I think people kind of just live their life and don’t respect that, when a lot of the freedoms we have are specifically because of veterans.” .

This month’s issue (link in bio) was inspired by artist, veteran, and Kensington resident John C. Zerbe, who is running art workshops for veterans throughout the neighborhood.
While working alongside other veterans, he saw that many of them wanted to share their stories and connect with others. More importantly, he suggested that Kensington Voice report on how exactly to access the US Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
We talked with some of the organizations in the neighborhood that are helping veterans access these resources. We also stopped by organizations in Kensington that have stepped in to help veterans without access to their VA benefits. Throughout this issue, we met many men and women bubbling with talent, life stories, and advice.
・・・
So to kick off a new year of Kensington Voice, we present you Finding Life After Service, a series of articles and media that aim to remind all of us that Veterans Day is not the only day we should be discussing how to best support our country’s veterans.
・・・
US Department of Veterans Affairs.
・・・

Please take the time to check out Kensington Voice’s latest issue, “Finding Life After Service.” .
.
I hope that all of the veterans and their stories of resilience move you as much as they have me. .
.
These photos are of a group of veterans during Coffee Clubs over the last few months at Hancock Manor, the veterans housing facility they live at in Kensington. The club is meant to encourage social connection among veterans as well as aid in suicide prevention, both of which are serious issues faced by the veteran population.
.
.
Follow the link in my bio to read the story I wrote about the club and the dangers that social isolation poses to both the physical and mental health of veterans. .
.
.
One thing in particular I’d like people to take from this issue is best explained in this excerpt from our Editor’s Note:
“So to kick off a new year of Kensington Voice 2020, we present you “Finding Life After Service,” a series of articles and media that aim to remind all of us that Veterans Day is not the only day we should be discussing how to best support our country’s veterans.”

Our friends at @impactservices are seeking an artist/group of artists to create a spring-themed creative placemaking campaign on 10 storefronts on the K&A commercial corridor. The campaign, made possible by a grant from the @knightfdn, aims to engage in a neighborhood conversation about the strengths and resilience of the K&A Community. Inspired by local resident, Genevieve Geer of Juggarnaut Glasshaus, the project’s goals are to: create BEAUTY, RESHAPE THE NEGATIVE NARRATIVE associated with K&A and provide opportunities for COLLABORATION between merchants and community.
