In 2018, the minds behind the iPhone’s core gestures left Apple to build @hi.iq . They raised $230 million from Silicon Valley’s top tier to kill the smartphone with the Humane AI Pin.
Instead, it became the most overhyped tech collapse of the decade.
The industry keeps trying to sell $700 beta-test hardware before the underlying software layer is actually ready. The ambient AI era is coming, but it won’t require a fragile wearable—it starts on the device you already own. #apple #siliconvalley #humane #wearable

Humane, the AI hardware startup behind the AI Pin, has been acquired by HP for $116 million. The company is immediately discontinuing sales of its $499 AI Pin, and existing devices will stop functioning entirely on February 28, 2025, at 12 PM PST. After that date, Humane’s AI Pins will no longer connect to servers or support calling, messaging, AI queries, or cloud access. The company is advising customers to transfer their data before the shutdown.

Humane, founded by ex-Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, raised over $230 million with the goal of replacing smartphones. However, the product struggled with negative reviews, high return rates, and safety concerns, including reports of battery fire risks. Despite attempts to salvage sales—including a $200 price cut—the company failed to gain traction.

HP’s acquisition includes Humane’s engineers, product managers, and select AI technologies, such as its CosmOS AI operating system, which could be integrated into HP’s personal computers, printers, and AI-powered ecosystems. The acquired team will form HP IQ, a new AI innovation lab focused on next-gen computing solutions. Humane had originally sought a much higher valuation, targeting $750 million to $1 billion for acquisition in May 2024.
