Honours Collection: Burning Out (Series 1)

Creative burnout is a phenomenon that fashion designers are seemingly struggling with during their years of education as well as in their career. Creative burnout is similar to burnout with its severe exhaustion and poor mental state, but it affects practitioners in creative fields causing them to be unable to use their creativity or want to create anything. While there are many contributors to creative burnout such as a poor work and life balance, lack of confidence and perfectionism, the aim of the research is to uncover whether it is a conceptual underpinning in fashion design that is a cause to it. An overfocus on conceptualisation can cause a lack of focus on the aesthetic component in design, leading to an imbalance. In order to address this imbalance as well as creative burnout, anti-fashion was used to lead the theoretical component while creative play was used to lead the practical component of the research. Within creative play, different techniques within deconstructivism were used. Deconstructivism involves fabric manipulation such as distressing, fraying, and burning that gives garments an unfinished look. These techniques form both conceptual and aesthetic purposes within the collection.
