Simple or not so simple?

MUÉVETE combines 2 very different Indian scales in the Indian Raga system. The notes or the scat “SARGAM” is in a major Pentatonic scale called BHUPALI and the singing is in a Dorian scale called BHIMPALASI!

IndiLat (@indi.lat), Maleh (@soymaleh) and Akapellah (@akapellahh) have released “Muévete,” a new single bringing together artists from India, Venezuela and Chile, out now. IndiLat is made up of producers Siddhant Bhatia (@siddhantbhatia) and Raghav Mehta (@raghavmehtamusic) from India, Cristóbal “Tibo” Gajardo (@tibo_gajardo) from Chile and Raniero Palm (@ranieropalm) from Venezuela.

The song opens with Indian konnakol, then sitar and tabla enter a mix of Latin percussion, guitars, drums and Venezuelan horns. Spanish carries the song, and Sanskrit appears in an invocation to Ganesha. The central line, “Muévete, como si se acabara el mundo,” translates to “Move, as if the world were ending.” IndiLat says the song grew out of the idea of movement as a way out of feeling stuck and describes this as a first of its kind Latin pop.

As a teenager, Siddhant Bhatia took the bus across Delhi to the Sangeet Natak Akademi library to read about old masters. In Australia, he studied sound alongside students from more than 50 countries. Back home, he recorded Ananta with nearly 30 of India’s top musicians. Sounds of Kumbha, where he was a principal producer, earned a Grammy nomination. At the Grammys, he met musicians from South America, and those conversations became IndiLat. The challenge, he says, is that Western listeners find Indian music overwhelming, and he wants to give them a way in without reducing its complexity. IndiLat’s first track pairs konnakol, sitar, and tabla with Latin percussion and Spanish vocals. It started with a bus ride to a library. The track is called ‘Muévete’. It means move it.⁠
