Dark Goddess…. KALI MA….. terrifying for enemies and egos… Nurturing Mother that removes illusion for her devotees. Scary- if you know that you are not living in your true nature. Rage Embodied. Primordial.

My act of dressing and becoming Kali is an act of Devotion, shot well outside of Halloween. One my series- of Goddesses The Divine Feminine- psycho/spiritual - exploration.

In celebration of Navatri, the nine night festival celebrating the Goddess Durga in many of her forms. This is Kalaratri 🔱

It is not a costume. But if I was to host a Halloween party and someone showed up as Kali-I would love it. There is a line for each individual - what is culture and what is costume. What is entertainment and what is art. Bring back the old gods! Let’s talk about it!

The Two Goddess Looks that required the most transformation, we created from all practical effects. Makeup, Lighting, Body Paint, Camera Lens hell even a faux heart that looked like it bled when bit into.

For Nyx/ Nut we used glow in the powder and mixed with various mediums to get that right consistency, splatter painted my body, exposed the powder to UV light in between shots, and shot in the dark.

Thank you so much to @de_con/ @noctillum for helping me transform into Nyx, Goddess of the Night

and to @visualsbyumesh/ @indianswift for helping capture Kali Ma, Goddess of Destruction.
And to @sunsetmakeupofficial for my mix of Kali Makeup

These are two Goddesses of my ongoing personal project “Embodiment of the Divine Feminine” A photographic series exploring the various archetypes of Goddesses from various pantheons, a psychological exploration of the many aspects of self, and a literal form of Worship. 🙏🏽

K A L I [KAA•lïe] Great Mother of Death and Destruction

Divine Mother who destroys Ego,
And is a Protective Loving Mother to her Devotees. The symbol of her tongue represents her insatiable desire to consume evil and illusion. She is also said to consume the pain and ignorance in her devotees.

A little bit of photo deconstruction: this is not post production. This is not editing. @indianswift took these photos love with a kaleidoscope lens held up to the camera. We love it because there is a version of Kali that has many heads- this representing all pasts all futures and all souls like Brahma.

This is a part of Niana’s personal photography series “Embodying the Feminine Divine” depicting Goddess from different myths in time and pantheons. An artistic and psychological journey as well as a literal form of worship.

Darkness herself, her name Kali root Sanskrit is “Kala-black” represents The Void: Her dark, black skin symbolizes the infinite, formless void from which the universe arises and to which it returns.

The name Kali first appears in the Artharva Veda (around 1200 years before common era).
