A tiny snippet of a recent project...

This short theme-establishing cue accompanies a montage of long shots revealing the discovery of the body of a missing teenager, and snippets from the ensuing police press conference.

The footage was expansive and unsettling, but the murder mystery itself is a minor subplot to a nuanced and complex family drama. So, the music needed to hint at these multiple levels and intricate layers of story, and a sense that all is not as it seems.

I was inspired by @theodoreshapiro's work on Severance, in which four closely-located but unsettling chords form the backbone of the theme of the whole show. It’s super effective and controlled writing, which fits that world perfectly. I challenged myself to invoke a sense of unease with a limited, close-moving harmonic idea here.

Some gorgeous players and helpers on this project:

Violin I: @amber.n.correa @annika.bowers s @chris_sanders0n @ellahodgsonlawsviolin @leythelmani_music
Violin II: @josh_jia Bethan Emily Rose, @indiareillyy @manon_balleyt
Viola: @sc.storey Carlotta Vitaloni, @jamieianjones Juliet Park
Cello: @ezraescobar_ @musicwithmadelaine
Double Bass: Yunze Wei

Piano: me 😅

Producer: @libertyoneillmusic
