Last week was a whirlwind!

Referring to pub day as a “release” is apropos, as I feel a huge sense of relief by for my memoir (finally) launching!

Thank you to everyone who showed up and my launch party with smiles and hugs and left with books — supporting indie bookstore Perasma Books!

Highlights from the party:
- Photo Booth to honor my favorite photo of Bob and Joy framed by the most amazingly fabulous and whimsical balloon sculpture by Karen Kappel Wilkerson!
- Seeing everyone’s smiles.
- Andrea Kulsrud brought copies of Carmel City Lifestyle Magazine with ME on the cover!

Other highlights:
— WTHR13 interview with Anne Marie Tiernon (lovely followup to Emily Longnecker’s original coverage of Bob & Joy’s wedding 12 years ago!)
Seeing familiar faces at The Whispering Shelf event in Indianapolis AND
— Joseph-Beth Booksellers event in Cincinnati
— Making new friends & hearing YOUR stories of joy and connection.

Off to Nashville this week to Parnassus Books on Wednesday! 🧡💚🩷

Please keep sharing photos with TELL ME ABOUT JOY and posting those 5-star reviews on Amazon & Goodreads!

Thank you! I am definitely feeling the love!
P.s. my dad’s shirt says “I’m not dead yet!” And I bought it when I saw Tim Curry in Spamalot on Broadway years ago — love that he wears it. He’s 86!

@sonvoltmusic is an American band in the same way that Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen are American artists. All three capture a unique part of America’s essence by looking at their environment and their inner selves and translating what they see into song without being flamboyantly nationalistic. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Son Volt find themselves both in the heart of the Midwest and at the gateway to the West. They don’t see a land of unlimited potential and bountiful resources like the pioneers before them, however, but rather a divided nation watching its once great economy slowly crumble. It makes sense that they named their 2009 record, from which this featured song, “When The Wheels Don’t Move,” came, “American Central Dust.”

Band members include Jay Farrar on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, James Walbourne on lead guitar, Andrew Duplantis on bass and backing vocals, Mark Spencer on keyboards and pedal steel, and Dave Bryson on percussion. Together, they create a blend of rock, folk, and country that is undoubtedly American, though distinctly Midwestern.

Whether they’re rocking out with keyboard solos in “Down to the Wire” or gracefully questioning the idea of freedom with the Tarkio-esque “Dynamite,” Farrar’s voice almost croons out his lyrics, sounding like 21st century Eddie Vedder. The most noticeable characteristic of the songs in general is their expression of nostalgia and loss for something long gone or maybe even something that never existed. They indeed paint a picture of dust and ruins and leave the listener with a feeling of isolation but not of despair.

Back in 2008, getting @theavettbrothers in for a #Laundromatinee session, on the upswing from “Emotionalism” was such a thrill. What we didn’t know, at the time, was they were going to unleash a new track from their upcoming major label debut album, “I And Love And You,” almost a full year before its release, and then ask us to sit on it until the album’s release! It was exhilarating, and it was torture. “Laundry Room” was the big fish we landed that day, but this one - “Telling Time” was pretty great as well. “Telling Time” was an early, unreleased song the band frequently performed live between 2007-2008. It was later released in 2012 on the album “The Carpenter” as “Pretty Girl from Michigan.”

@pastemagazine later named “I And Love And You” the best album of 2009, calling it an “overpowering acoustic album brimming with sadness and soul”.
