"My connection to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s mission is through my son, who was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis in 2017. Over the past nine years, our family has navigated more than 30 surgeries and 10 procedures. Ulcerative colitis changed how we approached school and work, and even how we moved through our community both during and several years after the pandemic. I am a Senior IT Project Manager at Kansas State University. Outside of work, I enjoy swimming as an outlet for fitness, fun, and stress relief. I swim with the Friendswood Sharks, a U.S. Masters Swimming team. During the first year after my son’s diagnosis, I remember swimming “angry”—using the pool as a place to work through the frustration and helplessness I felt. Serving on the South Texas Chapter Board is my more constructive way of pushing back. My ultimate hope for the Foundation and our chapter is that, someday, advances in treatment and a cure will allow us to work ourselves out of these volunteer jobs as well as change the lives of IBD patients and their families for the better."
