We stole the Land. Why is giving it back outrageous?

How do we keep talking ourselves into this flawed logic?

โ€œLand Backโ€ means returning land and the power to decide what happens on it.

Indigenous nations are rightfully demanding that US honor treaties it signed, and then broke.

When people assume that they would be kicked off their land or killed - that Indigenous nations would do exactly what was done to them - itโ€™s easy to see how deeply ingrained that colonial thinking actually is.

This Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day, share this and support the Indigenous organizers working to make land return happen.

Find Indigenous-led efforts to follow, amplify, and support in the comments.

Today and every day, challenge the idea that you can steal another peopleโ€™s land, take control of their lives, and that if enough time passes, society will call that normal and acceptable.

We cannot undo the genocide committed on this land, or the lives destroyed by slavery. But we owe Indigenous peoples and the descendants of enslaved people the fullest repair we can make.

Returning the Land, honoring rights, and restoring governing power are real things that we can do. If youโ€™re an American, ask yourself, why does even that still seem like too much to ask?

Does time passing make keeping stolen land okay?

Our collective is sending lots of love, strength, and luck to all our relatives in the Red Nation on this World Indigenous Peoples' Day. Across Turtle Island, Abya Yala, and all directions. We continue walking down the Red Road, the path paved by the first peoples, to resist colonization and steward our Earth Mother for the next 7 generations. 500 years of attempted erasure but guess what, we are still here. The Ancestors sent their best.

The Inland Empire is unceded land taken from its original stewards and peoples: the Tongva (Kizh/Gabrielenฬƒo), Taaqtam (Maarreฬ‚nga'yam/Yuhaaviatam/Serrano), Ivilyuqaletem (Cahuilla), and Payoฬmkawichum (Luisenฬƒo).
