Mami possession to teach me more about how to work it. Not all Mamisi (priests of Mami) are mediums but these pantheon of deities have a strong connection with mediums and how they often come to speak. I grew up watching my late elder TOGBE Dafliso, a great Mamisi and Afa priest, have several mediums at his shrine get possessed during rituals, but I didn’t really see much at our shrine. But when we started working Mami, this is what I experienced for the first time.

On my last trip to Thailand, I connected with the Thai Mami Wata, Phayanak (King of the Naga) and Phra Mae Thorani.

I collected some sea water for my Mami Wata shrine, something I like to do whenever I travel.

I also prayed to the Mami Wata I work with and the Thai Phayanak. Mami usually likes sweet drinks and fruits. But each is different, so you have to check with the ones you work with.

Getting to know your Mami is a personal and intimate experience that with the proper guidance can be life changing. But once you are properly connected with one, you are connected to all (even outside of Africa. This has been my personal experience).

One is born a Mami devotee, it is not like the other Vodu anyone can just get.
