ELEMENTS / @iolairarts + @orcasartbarn August 1–22 Thursdays–Saturdays, 11–4pm A celebration of artists making work here on Orcas Island. Annie, Chandelle, Indigo, Inese, Jared, Kandis, Laura, Maria, Michael, Robert, Rose, Susan, and Zackarya, thank you for making the work, sharing it with this community, and allowing all of us to witness it. There’s something pretty remarkable about living on an island where this many people make things. And there’s something equally special about two galleries coming together to support them. Iolair + Orcas Art Barn joining forces feels like a very Orcas version of a creative high-five. Two spaces saying, these are our artists, let’s make sure people see what they’re making. We were lucky enough to be the local photography team asked to document it. We’ll happily take it. ~ On a personal note, the other day I was at the Exchange and wandered upstairs into that special room where some older pieces of island art live, some made by people who may no longer be with us. I stood there looking at them and thought about how strange and beautiful it is that someone can spend their life looking at these trees, this water, these rocks, this particular light, and then leave some piece of what they saw behind. That’s what I love about art made here. On Orcas, Mother Nature is impossible to ignore. She gets into the work. The water, the woods, the fog, the changing light, the silence. Maybe it becomes a photograph. Maybe pottery. Maybe wood work, metal, paint, or paper. The landscape passes through a person and comes out the other side as something you can hold. And then you get to bring it home. I’ve bought art on Orcas and brought it back to the city, and I love what happens when you put a piece of this place on a wall somewhere else. It becomes a little window back. A reminder that the trees are still here, the water is still moving, and this strange little island is still full of people making beautiful things. That feels pretty special.

Some film photos from two and three summers ago when I was humming songs to myself that would become WIND INSIDE. I recorded those songs in little snippets, Summer 2024, as I was in and out of town all season. here are some of the images that were passing through my brain and lens around that time. Come hear WIND INSIDE in full next Sunday August 16th @wordvirusbooks for the release show! @floatingclouds.xoxo & @violetcreatura will perform as well. It’s going to be deep. 7 pm. All Ages. You’ll dream awake! Lastly, it’s bandcamp Friday today (for those who observe)—consider WIND INSIDE as a candidate for your BC shopping cart. Link in bio to be swept away to @antiquatedfuturedistro. Thank you so much.
