Every postcard has a story - this one also has 14 novels.

This story really gets started in 1905. That year the area surrounding the Grand Hotel in downtown Indianapolis burned to the ground. It was also the year the Georgianna, “Gigger,” our postcard’s recipient was born. (Her maiden name was Georgianna French.)

An Indianapolis businessman, Henry Severin Jr., was determined to revitalize the area after the fire. He bought the hotel and the surrounding property. The hotel was demolished, and he enlisted the help of a local architectural firm for the new hotel.

Bernard Vonnegut started Vonnegut and Bohn in 1888, and when Bernard passed away in 1908, the design of the hotel was left up to his son Kurt Vonnegut, Sr.

The hotel opened in 1913 and less than ten years later, Vonnegut had a son, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Yes, the novelist, Kurt Vonnegut.

Vonnegut went on to write fourteen novels and numerous short stories, essays, plays and non-fiction works.

But he never had a character named “Gigger.”

Here’s an angle of our home that I’ve never shared on here before. Partly because the floor is uneven, the carpet is dirty, the ceiling is leaking, #ourcenturyoldhome problems, and it’s always full of laundry piles. So in case you find yourself scrolling and seeing nothing but big, beautiful, Pinterest perfect homes on here today… just thought id drop a reminder that behind every picture perfect square is a whole lot of real life happening in the background.
