4 nights in Kigali, Rwanda 🇷🇼

Our first stop in Africa. If there’s one thing we’re taking away from Rwanda, it’s the genocide.

In 1994, over roughly 100 days, more than 800,000 people were killed — primarily Tutsi, along with Hutu and others who opposed the killing. At its worst, people were murdered at an unimaginable pace, day after day.

What hit us hardest was understanding how a society arrives there. It wasn’t sudden. Under German and then Belgian colonial rule, the differences between Hutu, Tutsi and Twa were hardened into rigid ethnic groups — Belgium even printed ethnicity onto everyone’s ID card. After independence those divisions were exploited politically, and years of discrimination, propaganda and violence built toward 1994. We spent three days trying to understand it.

🎨 Inema Arts Center — contemporary Rwandan art, on a first day that covered 10+ miles on foot across the city.

🛍 Kimironko Market — a huge, buzzing local market packed with color, food and fabric.

🏛 Kigali Convention Centre — the city’s domed landmark, lit up at night in Rwanda’s colors.

🕊 Kigali Genocide Memorial — the heavy day: learning much more about what happened and the people who were lost.

🏨 Hôtel des Mille Collines — the real “Hotel Rwanda,” which sheltered around 1,200 people during the genocide.

🇧🇪 Camp Kigali — the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial, where ten UN soldiers were killed on April 7, 1994.

🍲 Nyamirambo — the lively neighborhood where the mood lifted: an incredible local lunch of ugali and sombe, a Rwandan milk bar, and a women’s handicraft center.

What stays with us most is the contrast — a country that lived through unimaginable destruction within living memory, now remarkably clean, fast-growing, and full of some of the kindest people we’ve met. It hasn’t simply “recovered” — some wounds don’t disappear with time — but seeing how far it’s come left us with real hope. And “Land of a Thousand Hills”? After three days of walking, confirmed 😂

A very special first chapter to our African adventure. Country 59. 🇷🇼❤️ Follow along for more!

We had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Mathew Norris @out.spacer from the USA 🇺🇸on his first visit to Rwanda🇷🇼.

He was impressed by how organized and clean Rwanda is — his very first impression of the country. He visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which was a heavy and deeply moving experience as he learned about Rwanda's history. He also explored the Inema Art Center and proudly took home a Made-in-Rwanda souvenir.

He promised he will be back. We hope he enjoys Zanzibar as his next destination.

It was a pleasure hosting you, Sir. Warm welcome to Rwanda 🇷🇼♥️

We are honoured to share that BEYOND THE GENOCIDE, our feature documentary from Rwanda, has been officially selected for the 12th International Film Festival of Shimla, taking place in Himachal Pradesh, India.

The selection creates an important opportunity for a Rwandan story of memory, reconciliation, healing and rebuilding to enter into dialogue with Indian audiences.

As part of this journey, we had the privilege of meeting with H.E. the High Commissioner of India to Rwanda to formally introduce our creative work at Zion Films Company and, more importantly, to explore how our work as filmmakers can contribute to deeper cultural understanding and meaningful connections between Rwanda and India.
We believe cinema can do more than cross borders.

It can create conversations between people, carry histories into new spaces, and open possibilities for collaboration where cultures meet.

We are grateful for the warm reception and openness extended to us, and we look forward to seeing where this conversation may lead.

From Rwanda to India — through cinema, memory and human connection. 🇷🇼🤝🇮🇳

Part 5/9 - The Culture The Art

Rwanda taught me with rhythm, art, and stories.
From music to tradition, culture here isn’t watched. It’s felt.

Heartnote 003 - Inherited Silence

Three generations. One story. A silence that travels through time.

The black cloth represents the things we inherit but rarely speak about pain, memories, traditions, and stories left unfinished.

What will you choose to keep, and what will you choose to leave behind?

My heart is so full. After my walk with @adelenandan, I came up to her condo & beautiful memories of Rwanda came flooding back from our #heartofcabi trips!

Seeing this incredible piece of artwork, painted by Emmanuel from @inemaart, of Chicago brought it all back — the beauty, the people, the friendships & the memories we made.

Some moments, places and friendships just stay with you. This one definitely does. ❤️ @askcarolynd @the.joyousjourney @cabiclothing #cabiclothing #cabistylist #cabicareer #heartofcabifoundation

If you're ever in the beautiful nation of #rwanda🇷🇼, please get one of the best guides in the business, my man, @bernardin.guide.

He showed us around to some of the most impactful cultural spaces and museums in Kigali, like the Genocide Memorial and @inemaart center. We got to learn about the nation's tragedy and triumph. Plus, we saw some beautiful original art and met an enormous doggie.

Finally, we got to get up close and personal with a troop of Gorillas 🦍, including a pregnant female, a cute baby gorilla who was just as curious as the humans watching him, and the infamous silverback. It was a moving experience that words can't describe: being in the natural environment with such majestic, powerful animals. The vertical hike up the side of a dormant volcano isn't for the faint at heart.

The Rwandans have done a lot of work to incorporate local communities into their wildlife tourism industry, so that it benefits people and the nation. Please, if you can, visit Rwanda!

What if the best part of your Rwanda trip wasn’t outside the city?

Kigali was once the place travelers passed through before heading to the gorillas. Today, visitors are staying longer for its cafés, galleries, markets, and community experiences.

From women-led cultural tours to locally created hospitality, Kigali is reshaping what a Rwanda journey can look like.
