There were many, many highlights of this year’s edition of ARC 300 & 2016 Studies Abroad: Berlin, A City in Film, and it will we take me several days to catch up on overdue posts. One afternoon I will never forget was created by the photographer and Daniels Faculty alumnus David K. Ross. (I wrote an essay for Archetypes, his brilliant book of photographs of mock-ups on construction sites.) In Berlin, David transformed Wolf Kino’s studio space into a camera obscura. He spoke for 20 minutes as our eyes adjusted to the dark, then opened a small aperture to let the moving picture of Wildenbruchstraße floor in. Upside-down and reversed, the life of the city was projected live before our eyes.

“Under Construction” has crossed the Atlantic to the Rhode Island School of Design. This adaptation of the exhibition, first presented at the Solar Observation Tower at Collegium Helveticum, Swiss Institute for Advanced Study in Zurich, highlights construction sites as an ephemeral and often neglected stage in the documentation of the built environment. Curated by Reto Geiser, the installation presents works by contemporary photographers Tibor Bielicky, Federico Farinatti, Stefano Graziani, Marianne Mueller, and David K. Ross, along with a selection of Geiser’s research materials, to reflect the building site as a pivotal moment in architecture at the intersection between the invisible and the visible. The installation is on view through October 16, 2025 at the Architecture Department of the Rhode Island School of Design, Bayard Ewing Building, 231 S Main St, Providence, RI. Special thanks to Stephanie Rae Lloyd and Michael Kubo (RISD), Igor Marjanović (Rice University), Philip Ursprung (ETH Zurich), Sebastian Bonhoeffer and Mario Wimmer (Collegium Helveticum, Swiss Institute for Advanced Study, Zurich), Hanan Traiba, Noëmi Mollet. Details of artworks shown are copyright by the artists. #architecture #construction #underconstruction #buildingsite #photography #architecturalphotography #mockup #reverseruins #ruins

The Department of Architecture is proud to announce the Fall 2025 exhibition, ‘Under Construction’, curated by Reto Geiser. Please join us on Monday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bayard Ewing Building, Room 106, for a lecture and exhibition opening. ‘Under Construction’ brings together the perspectives of five exceptional contemporary photographers, who each capture unfinished states of architecture through their particular lens. The exhibition features the work of Tibor Bielicky, Federico Farinatti, Stefano Graziani, Marianne Mueller, and David K. Ross. Architectural photography typically shows how buildings look, or maybe, more precisely, how we are supposed to see them. Rarely, though, have architectural histories included pictures that trace moments in the construction of projects. Since its introduction in the nineteenth century, photography has taken a central role in the mediation of architecture to a broader public. More than any other medium, it allows us to trace and document the development of an architectural work from its conception to its completed state, and yet the discipline has most often prioritized the completed work, rather than its making. Rooted in the belief that photography offers a unique tool to comprehend the world around us, the five photographic takes presented here allow us to understand the building site as a social artifact, a place of cultural, political, and economical actions, rather than an ephemeral necessity in the process toward what is recognized as architecture. Reto Geiser is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs at Rice University School of Architecture @ricearch and a founding partner in the award-winning design practice MG&Co @molletgeiser ‘Under Construction’ will be on view in the Bayard Ewing Building Gallery through October 16.

🔗 Lien en bio — 🗃️ 𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 | 𝗖𝗩𝟭𝟭𝟲 This article, originally published in our Winter 2020 issue, is now freely accessible on our website. Shot in abandoned construction sites, David K. Ross’s Children of Kaos elicits a feeling of disorientation. In her essay, Jeanne Randolph imagines a fictional dialogue to interpret the images through psyche and myth, appropriation and seduction. The Greek deities in Ross’s titles invite us to draw parallels between antiquity and the present: can a rundown scene sustain the magic of a tragic myth?

- Résonance des silences, @alainlefortphoto - Ces lieux qui nous habitent, @chloebeaulac - Children of Kaos, @inferstructure 🔗 Lien en bio — 🗃️ 𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 | 𝗖𝗩𝟭𝟭𝟲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀 What do wild, silent landscapes say about us? As an architectural abbreviation, the mock-up is designed to be demolished and as such carries a definitive expiration date, one that usually coincides with the completion of the building it emulates; it is a monument to iteration and contingency. 🔗 Read more on profiler.world #profilerarchitecture

Archetypes, by David K. Ross, documents full-scale architectural mock-ups as they appear on construction sites and testing facilities worldwide. A form of proxy architecture, the mock-up is frequently comprised of disparate elements from a single building project. Windows, curtain wall systems, or material samples often find themselves brought together in an assemblage that bears more resemblance to public art installations than to architecture. Built to a scale of 1:1 and assembled to assist with particularly difficult construction details, the mock-up aids in the overall understanding of how a building’s components will appear or function. 🔗 Read more on profiler.world #profilerarchitecture
