The HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is still available.

It is one piece of a larger body of work from the Humboldt Grace @humboldt.legacy.project , work that brings together preservation, history, science, cultivation, analytical testing, community knowledge, consumer feedback, and ethics.

As this Skunk #1 report series comes to a close, we are moving into what comes next:

Community + Industry Ethics Report
Public Safety Ethics Report
The Synthesis Report (working title)

Each piece adds to the larger record. Together, they help us ask better questions about how we honor the plant, the people, and the culture.

NOBODY COULD HAVE DONE THIS ALONE. 🧪🌱

Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs @infinite_cal helped us listen to what the plant could tell us through the data.

InfiniteCAL donated the analytical testing for HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 across participating grows.

10 COAs showed:

🧪 THC: 8.88–25.35%
🌿 Total terpenes: 0.58–1.78%

The genetics were shared.
The expression was not identical.

Then InfiniteCAL helped us go deeper by donating specialized thiol testing on two samples.

Farm #7
DMS: 7.66 µg/g
Prenylthiol: 14.884 µg/g

Farm #11
Prenylthiol: 1.302 µg/g

For a project investigating Skunk #1, those results raised fascinating questions about cannabis aroma and what people mean when they describe cannabis as “skunky.”

Two thiol samples can’t tell us why those differences occurred or represent HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 as a whole.

But they gave us another piece of evidence—and more questions to ask.

Preserve. Document. Test. Compare. Question. Listen to the plant.

Thank you to InfiniteCAL, Josh Swider and the team for donating this work and making this level of analytical research possible for a community-led project.

👉 See the complete cannabinoid, terpene and thiol findings, methodology and limitations in the HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report at HumboldtGrace.org.

Nobody could have done this alone.

This is the part of the @humboldt.legacy.project Skunk #1 Case Study that numbers alone can’t explain.

We could not have done this work without in-kind donations.

We didn’t have an institutional research budget behind us.

What we had were people, businesses, and organizations who believed the work mattered enough to contribute what they could do best.

@sensationalsolutions entrusted us with the two selections that started the research.

@hendrxfarm preserved them.

@canopyright_ helped develop a secure system for a protected chain of custody.

@medicinal.genomics contributed DNA testing and cross-reference research.

@thegrowoff ycreated the Skunk Off, bringing growers together to cultivate the same genetics across different environments.

@infinite_cal contributed the analytical testing—including the thiol testing that gave us another layer of understanding of the plant.

@visitmocahumboldt grew No. 1 so consumers could experience it and share their feedback.

And @inkpeoplecenterforthearts give Humboldt Grace a nonprofit home as our fiscal sponsor.

Each partner brought something different.

Genetics. Preservation. Technology. Science. Cultivation. Chemistry. Consumer experience. Infrastructure.

No one organization could have done all of it.

That is part of what this six-year project taught us: legacy knowledge, science, technology and business can work together when we respect what each brings to the table and listen to one another.

Love & Grace may have been the glue and the fuel—but these in-kind contributions gave us the tools to keep moving.

To every partner who invested expertise, resources, trust and time into this work:

Thank you. You are part of what the plant taught us. 💜

0% chose THC percentage as the primary factor influencing their choice.

We found that finding exciting.

For years, much of the cannabis marketplace has been built around a number on a label: THC%.

But when consumers experienced HLP Skunk #1 and told us what mattered to them, THC wasn’t what led their choice.

They talked about the legacy story.
They talked about supporting Humboldt legacy.
They connected with the plant, its experience, and the culture around it.

It raises a much bigger question:

What if we have been measuring value wrong?

The @humboldt.legacy.project spent six years following one plant through preservation, DNA-supported lineage research, registration, cultivation across different farms, chemical testing, and consumer research.

We weren’t trying to make the plant prove what we already believed.

We listened to the plant.

And some of what it told us challenges how this industry has learned to define value.

Love & Grace weren’t just our values. They were how this work survived. Our ethical standards.

For six years, the Humboldt Legacy Project brought together people who did not always speak the same language — legacy knowledge holders, farmers, scientists, laboratories, technology partners, businesses, advocates, and community members.

There was no big grant holding it all together.

There was respect. Trust. Listening. Love & Grace.

We learned that collaboration doesn’t require everyone to think the same way. It requires respecting what each person brings to the table — and being willing to listen to each other, and to the plant.

That is how a community-led project with almost no funding kept moving for six years.

And it is also why we believe access to this work matters.

If the cost of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is a barrier, we created a waiver so it was accessible for anyone to read .

We want the knowledge created through this work to come back to the people and communities who helped make it possible. That’s why we copyrighted it.

Fill out the waiver. Read the report. Carry the knowledge forward.

Why did we do it this way?

Because this was never just about one plant.

For six years, the Humboldt Legacy Project followed a simple idea: listen to the people, follow the evidence, and let the plant speak.

We worked across layers—preservation and registration, DNA-supported lineage research, cultivation research, laboratory testing, consumer research, historical research, and legacy knowledge—to ask what could be learned when community, science, history, and the plant were allowed to inform one another.

And we did it with just $1,463 in direct funding.

That number is important—but not because this work was only worth $1,463.

It shows how much was contributed by the people who made it possible: growers, scientists, laboratories, researchers, advisors, consumers, knowledge holders, partners, and community members who shared their time, expertise, experience, and trust.

The real investment was the community.

That is also why we believe the value created by this work should come back to the community.

If the cost of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is keeping you from accessing it, please apply for a fee waiver. If you participated in this work, we especially want you to have access.

And if you are able to purchase the report or make a donation, your support helps Humboldt Grace continue this work and build pathways that protect knowledge, preserve legacy, and create value for cannabis legacy communities.

For the community.
For the knowledge.
For the plant.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Because cannabis value has increasingly been reduced to a number on a label.

But when we asked consumers about HLP Skunk #1 No. 1, 0% selected THC percentage as their primary factor.

Instead, nearly half pointed to the Skunk #1 legacy story, and roughly 40% identified supporting the mission to help Humboldt’s cannabis legacy as important.

This was a small exploratory survey, so we are not claiming it represents all cannabis consumers.

But it raises an important question:

Have we built a marketplace around THC while overlooking other kinds of value?

History. Place. Authenticity. Transparency. The people behind the plant. A connection to legacy.

And that matters far beyond Humboldt.

Across the world, legacy cannabis communities have carried plants, knowledge, cultivation traditions and cultural histories forward—often through prohibition, criminalization and enormous personal risk.

If consumers can value the story, origin, knowledge and people connected to a plant, then preserving cannabis legacy is not only about protecting the past.

It may also be part of building future value for legacy communities everywhere.

That is one of the larger questions the HLP Skunk #1 Case Study asks the industry to consider.

SAME GENETICS. DIFFERENT EXPRESSION.

When we put HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 into the hands of different growers, we weren’t trying to prove that one cultivation method was better than another.

We wanted to see what the plant would show us.

Across the primary Grow-Off samples, Total THC ranged from 8.88% to 25.35%.

But THC wasn’t the only thing that varied.

When we looked deeper into the cannabinoid profiles, something else became interesting:

Some minor cannabinoids were detectable in plants from some farms and not detected in others.

Same preserved plant. Different cultivation environments. Different chemical expressions.

This was not a controlled experiment, so we cannot say that a particular environment or cultivation practice caused a particular result.

But the variation gives us something important to investigate.

Because if we judge cannabis primarily by genetics and THC percentage, what else are we missing?

The minor cannabinoids are only one part of it.

We also looked at terpenes, cultivation conditions—and eventually compounds connected to one of Skunk #1’s most famous characteristics: its aroma.

That is where this story gets even more interesting.

The graph here shows one layer.
The report connects the layers.

THEN WE LET THE PLANT SPEAK.

We documented its history, gave the plants working names, took steps to protect the record, and examined the genetics.

But DNA could only tell us part of the story.

So we added another layer: cultivation.

HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 went into the hands of growers across different farms, environments and cultivation approaches.

29 registered.
11 usable cultivation records returned.
10 samples received laboratory COAs.

We weren’t looking for everyone to produce the same result.

We were listening.

What changed? What stayed consistent? What could the chemistry tell us—and what could we learn from the growers?

The genetics were shared.
The expression was not identical.

Thank you to every grower who participated, including those who chose to remain private, and to the seven who agreed to be publicly acknowledged:

@seed707_llc • @fenariofarms0420 • @truemomandpop • @empressfarms • @solspiritfarm • @talkingtrees.humboldt • @savage__farms__humboldt_co

You didn’t just grow the plant. You helped us listen to it.

Over the next several posts, we’ll share what the plant showed us.

DNA GAVE US ANOTHER LAYER — AND ANOTHER LAYER OF PROTECTION.

Once we had begun establishing chain of custody, we were ready to send plant material to Medicinal Genomics.
The question wasn’t simply, “Can DNA prove this is Skunk #1?”

It was: What can genetics add to the record, and how can that record help protect what has been preserved?
The testing gave us DNA-supported lineage evidence and a genetic reference for the HLP Skunk #1 selections.
That matters because once a genetic record exists, there is something to compare back to. If a name changes hands, a plant is mislabeled, material is lost, or someone later makes a claim about what they have, the genetics provide another piece of evidence that can be examined alongside provenance and chain of custody.

In that way, DNA becomes more than identification.
It becomes part of preservation and protection.
But we were also careful not to ask DNA to do more than it can.

A DNA result by itself does not prove that a plant is “the original Skunk #1,” establish ownership, or replace the people and history connected to the plant.
It is one layer.

Chain of custody protects the path.
DNA helps protect the genetic record.
History protects the story.

Together, they make it much harder for the plant, the name, and the people who carried it to become separated from one another.

The record was built one layer at a time.

WHAT THIS WORK IS

The Humboldt Legacy Project HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is a community-led effort to document what can be learned when plant history, cultivation experience, scientific testing, technology, consumer research, and community knowledge are examined together.

This was not a breeding project.
It was not an attempt to claim ownership of Skunk #1.
It was not simply a study of “skunky weed.”
And it was never intended to provide one final answer to every question surrounding the plant.

The work followed two preserved Skunk #1 selections through provenance research, DNA-supported lineage research, cultivation across different environments, cannabinoid and terpene testing, specialized thiol testing, and consumer research.

But the laboratory data was only one part of the record.

The work also asked:

Who preserved the plant?
Where did it travel?
How was it cultivated?
Who receives credit?
Who gave consent?
Who benefits from the knowledge?
What can the evidence actually support?

Growers, researchers, laboratories, preservation partners, knowledge holders, advisors, consumers, scientists, and technologists all helped make this record possible.

No one person created this work alone.

Cannabis knowledge is being lost faster than it is being documented. This report offers one model for bringing genetics, history, science, technology, ethics, cultivation experience, and community memory into the same conversation.

The plant gave us the subject.
The community helped create the record.

The Humboldt Legacy Project is an initiative of Humboldt Grace.
