Three years ago today, The Nun II, directed by franchise veteran Michael Chaves, hit theaters and went on to gross $269 million worldwide. VFX breakdown footage by Ingenuity Studios reveals the blue-screen environment used for the film’s climactic exorcism sequence involving Valak. Both stills highlight different stages of the compositing process. The top image shows Valak’s face being recreated in a 3D environment and composited onto the enormous practical Nun prop. The bottom image reveals the lighting setup and several practical elements used within the blue-screen stage for the sequence in which Valak is set on fire. The large Valak prop was apparently filmed being practically set ablaze on a controlled, protected set under the supervision of the crew, then digitally composited into the corresponding footage featuring the actors. A vertical light source can also be seen on the blue-screen stage, likely positioned to reproduce the intense illumination and interactive lighting that the fire would cast onto the surrounding environment and performers. Still of Valak bathed in red church lighting, captured by stills photographer @calvobrunocine Still of Sister Irene by still photographer @calvobrunocine Concept art alongside the corresponding final shot, found on Michael Chaves’ official website. Top image: VFX breakdown of the newspaper stand sequence, created by French visual effects studio MPC. Bottom image: Mold work for the Goat’s SFX, created by CLSFX Atelier 69. Horror is (figuratively and literally) killing it right now, dominating the box office and streaming services around the world. One of the leading reasons behind the genre’s ability to entice and engage a wider demographic is the advancements of VFX capabilities. “Every moment in a film has its place in the rhythm and flow of the audience's experience,” says Edward J Douglas (@edwardjdouglas), VFX supervisor who's work includes recent hit 'Longlegs'. LBB’s April Summers speaks to the VFX supervisors behind Weapons, Longlegs and The Monkey about how their craft became the genre’s greatest weapon. To read, click the link in bio. This piece also features insights from, @rodeofx_film.episodic’s Mathieu Dupuis and @ingenuityvfx’s’ Gabriel Regentin.

Big thanks to Ingenuity Studios (@ingenuityvfx) for virtually visiting our REEL Film class at LPS Richmond and leading such a dope VFX workshop for our students! They shared so much insight, encouragement, and real-world experience — and the best part is, a lot of the techniques they taught actually made it into our students' final films. It was powerful to see the direct impact of their time and support. It really means a lot when working professionals take the time to show up for young creatives. Our students walked away feeling inspired, seen, and more confident in their storytelling. We appreciate you, Ingenuity Studios, for being part of our village and helping our students bring their visions to life. 💻🎬💥

Whoooooooaaaaaa it’s been a while ~ but your girl has been putting in some work to afford her eggs. 🍳 Earlier this year I had the pleasure of storyboarding and illustrating some style frames for The Ringer’s hit podcast The Big Picture. Prelim animation by me followed by some process, color and texture exploration, lower third design exercises, and the final spot animated by my beautiful team at @ingenuityvfx ✨
