An afternoon with a path breaker-history maker!! Awed to hear Guilford College’s Dr. Adrienne Israel. We know her as a 1984 Johns Hopkins PhD and the first Black woman graduate of our doctoral program. Her stories are quickly becoming legend. Thank you to @inheritancebaltimore and @dr.shawntay for making this visit possible!

I’m moderating a panel discussion w/ a group of AMAZING photogs y’all!! 🎙️

Join us this Thursday, September 5 at 7pm at the Eubie Blake Jazz and Cultural Center for the “Bearing Witness: Photographing Black Families in Baltimore” Artist’s Talk and Panel Discussion, featuring the photographers featured in the exhibition—Daisy Brown, John Clark Mayden, I.H. Webster Phillips, III, Brian Pinson, and SHAN Wallace-and moderated by Deyane Moses, Dir. of Partnerships + Programs at AFRO Charities (and former IB Community Archives Fellow!). Light refreshments will be provided.

__________

Bearing Witness: Photographing Black Families in Baltimore highlights the work of six local Black photographers who explore historical and contemporary depictions of Black family life. It features a mix of established and emerging artists—Daisy Brown, John Clark Mayden, I. Henry Phillips, Sr., I.H. Webster Phillips, III, Brian Pinson, and SHAN Wallace—whose images of Black Baltimore from the 1950s to the present display how Black folk live, love, struggle, and triumph in their everyday lives.

Provocative, insightful, unfiltered. For almost 200 years, Black photographers have intentionally documented Black communities. They have used their cameras and creativity to portray Black people “as they see them” and redress the racialized narratives which are common in popular media. In Baltimore, Maryland, Black photographers have played a critical role in representing lives too seldom celebrated and too often forgotten. With their images featured in spaces ranging from family photo albums to national publications, these artists embody a tradition of witnessing and storytelling from a Black point of view.

This exhibition is curated by Dr. Raynetta Wiggins-Jackson, Africana Curatorial Fellow (Inheritance Baltimore), Angela Koukoui, Associate Director of Outreach, Engagement, and Inclusion Initiatives, Center for Archival Futures (CAFÉ) University of Maryland College Park, Co-director of Community Archives Program (Inheritance Baltimore) and myself, Tonika Berkley, Africana Archivist, Co-director of Community Archives Program (Inheritance Baltimore).
