Eid Mubarak 🥳 Last week, Muslims around the world took part in Eid al-Fitr. Although the festivities have ended, we still have a lot to celebrate.

I’m really excited to announce that the library system I work for now has My Kufi by Author Adil Ismaeel and Illustrator Yaqiyn Abdul-Zahir!

If you have been following this page for some time, you might remember the review I wrote last Eid. As part of my Ramadan series, I reviewed a few of my favorite picture books written by Muslim Authors.

One of my goals for this page and as a future children’s librarian is to share as many phenonomal inclusive children’s literature as possible. Especially books that celebrate Black and Muslim voices. I hope that these recommendations will expand your personal library and make there way to your public library system.

I’ve been elated ever since seeing My Kufi at the library. And I’m looking forward to seeing even more of our other favorite books make there way to our shelves. This feels like a prayer answered and I know it’s only the beginning!

“When we think of "cool" we often don't think about the Global South. The 90s for myself and many are the height of "cool" so incorporating elements from our recent past in a piece about economic development felt fitting, because what's cooler than communities working together?”⠀

As we are experiencing the last 10 days of Ramadan, I want to share The Most Powerful Night: A Ramadan Story by Ndaa Hassan and Soumbal Qureshi with everyone. This is a beautiful story with captivating illustrations that walks the reader through the history and blessings of the most beautiful night of Ramadan: Laylat Al-Qadr. •
•

The picture book follows our young protagonist, Laila, as she expresses her sadness over Ramadan's imminent departure. Upon witnessing this, her mother does a fantastic job explaining to our main character that although the holy month is coming to an end, the most sacred times are the last 10 nights. •
•
Her mother describes Laylat Al-Qadr (night of divine power) as both “magnificent” and “wondrous”. She emphasizes the importance of increasing worship throughout the last 10 nights since Laylat Al-Qadr falls within the last 10 nights & is more blessed than a 1000 months! •
As the story develops, the reader goes on a magical journey with Laila from grieving the end of Ramadan to discovering the beauty of the last 10 days. Her excitement forces the audience to join her in celebration.

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day weekend! I wanted to celebrate by sharing a heartwarming mother-daughter day book. Saturday by Oge Mora (@oge_mora ) follows a mother and daughter duo as they plan their entire day together. Since the mom’s only day off is Saturday, they plan a full outing for some much needed quality time. They plan on doing everything from going to the library to lounging in a salon. And from a relaxing picnic to a one night only puppet show! Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t go as planned and the mother-daughter outing is faced with constant set backs. But with a bit of comfort and a lot of improvising, they are able to experience a worthwhile day. •

This book does a great job expressing the value of cherishing the time you have with your loved ones. And more importantly, it shows that you don’t always need to go out and spend a lot of money to have a great time. Some of the most memorable moments can happen right at home 😌 •

I would also like to give a huge thank you to @thingsmadebynoor for creating this beautiful artwork!
