Have we made eating grains more confusing than it needs to be?

Rice makes you gain weight. Wheat must go. Gluten-free is healthier. And millets will apparently fix everything.

These are questions the audience asked me at “The Living Table: Lost Grains of India” by @inkpotindia_ at @begreenr , with moderator @simarmalhotra12 and fellow panellist @nitindixit

🌾 RICE AND WHEAT DON’T NEED TO DISAPPEAR
Look at the proportions on your plate. If grains take up almost all the space, changing the grain won’t fix what’s missing.

🥣 FERMENTATION HAS A PURPOSE
Fermenting grains can reduce phytate, a natural compound that binds minerals such as iron and zinc. This can make some minerals more available during digestion.

🍞 GLUTEN-FREE ISN’T AUTOMATICALLY HEALTHIER

A gluten-free diet is essential for coeliac disease and may be advised for other medical reasons. But it has no established health or weight-loss advantage for the general population.

🌱 THERE’S NO SINGLE “BEST” MILLET

Ragi stands out for calcium. Bajra contributes iron. Foxtail and proso offer a relatively higher protein contribution.

Different nutrients are a good reason to rotate your grains.

⚖️ MILLETS AND WEIGHT LOSS: THE SWAP ISN’T EVERYTHING

Less-polished millets can add fibre, which may help you feel fuller. But switching grains doesn’t necessarily reduce calories.

Millet is a grain, not a medicine. Eat it for nourishment. Don’t expect miracles.

All the way from New Zealand to New Delhi, @amritakaurmusic brought the soul of Punjabi Sufi music to the historic walls of Purana Qila.
