🕴️ SECTIONS: MASTERS – The Greatest Filmmakers Vissa namn behöver ingen närmare presentation!

Well guys, I’ve had another fantastic year at the #bfilondonfilmfestival But, yesterday was my final day at the festival. So, my festival coverage ends here, but before I say farewell. Here are reviews for the two films I saw yesterday - Simon Stone’s @elsinoremovie and Danny Boyle’s @inkthemovie Firstly, I saw #elsinore at the BFI Southbank, the whole film is carried solely by Andrew Scott’s go-for-broke performance as late actor Ian Charleston. Scott’s performance has great amounts of passion and pathos in equal measure as Charleston confronts his mortality whilst training to play the tragic character Hamlet at the National Theatre. Based on true events, the film recreates the 1980’s period well as well as having an equally game cast in Olivia Coleman, Joe Locke and Johnny Flynn. It’s an emotional film, but one worth watching for Scott’s performance alone. Secondly, I took the train back up north for the Danny Boyle Screen Talk which was great and informative with Danny talking all things Manchester, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. I even got to ask him a question about his 2015 Steve Jobs movie which I adore. Afterwards, I was treated to my final screening of the festival with Danny’s new movie #ink The best way to describe the movie is that it’s the tabloid newspaper equivalent to The Social Network. It’s a wild and thrilling movie that focuses on notorious people that we all know now, but the film takes you back to the beginning in 1969 where Rupert Murdoch and Larry Lamb were just two ambitious underdog outsiders on Fleet Street and subsequently how the “people’s paper” lost it’s humanity in pursuit of readers and scandals. The performances from the whole cast are fantastic throughout with Jack O Connell and Guy Pearce being standouts as Lamb and Murdoch respectively. Boyle’s direction is top notch as always, making use of every camera and visual technique in the book to make this adaptation of James Graham’s stage play as cinematic as possible. Well folks, that’s all for 2026’s edition of the BFI London Film Festival. It’s been a joy sharing my reviews and coverage with you all. I look forward to seeing you all again soon 😊👍

Last night, I went to a BFI London Film Festival screening of good Mancunian kid Danny Boyle’s brand new film ‘Ink’, nearly three months before its January 8th, 2027 release date. It also included an in-person introduction by Boyle himself. REVIEW: Danny Boyle’s biographical drama about Larry Lamb and Rupert Murdoch’s takeover of The Sun newspaper is a showy, but gritty piece. Written by James Graham, adapted from his own stage play of the same name, the plot jumps straight into it, starting with the offer and then recruiting of the team and establishing the paper to what it would eventually be. They started out as a bland paper before Murdoch and Lamb eventually got the idea to start loading the paper with horoscopes, sports and eventually the Page 3 girls. It then started to veer into a true crime procedural with the third act, depicting the investigation around the 1969 kidnapping and murder of Muriel McKay, wife of Murdoch’s deputy Alick McKay. The performances are fantastic, particularly Jack O’Connell and Guy Pearce, who are engaging as Larry Lamb and Rupert Murdoch. I thought Claire Foy was very good as Jules, a fictional character who is an amalgam of different journalists on Fleet Street, where News International are based. It has visuals evocative of the era. There are flashback scenes that look grainy, some flashy shots to depict movements of violence and debauchery. The opening scene starts out looking like a printed illustration from a newspaper before gradually fading into the scene as it was originally shot. The editing is sharp, as archival footage is rapidly and ransomed spliced into conversation scenes, including still images that have been converted into videos via AI, as well as an AI-generated Margaret Thatcher popping up in a dream sequence at some point during the end. And it also has humour in some parts that is quite crude and British, packed with nostalgic references, such as the old TV adverts that The Sun (remember when newspapers used to have TV ads?). 9/10 #inkmovie #dannyboyle #homemcr #thesunnewspaper #lff

@britishfilminstitute #lff
