What heritage can be.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

GCL were proud to serve as the main contractor on the conservation and reordering of St Cybi’s Church and Eglwys y Bedd in Holyhead, helping to deliver a transformative project at one of Wales’ most historically significant ecclesiastical sites. The site includes the Grade I listed medieval church of St Cybi, situated within the walls of the Roman fort of Caer Gybi, together with the adjacent Grade II listed chapel, Eglwys y Bedd.

Working alongside a highly skilled consultant team, the project carefully balanced the conservation of important historic fabric with the introduction of modern facilities and improved accessibility. Extensive archaeological discoveries during the works required a sensitive and adaptable construction approach, ensuring that the site’s rich Roman, medieval and later heritage was respected throughout the programme.

The completed scheme has created a more flexible, accessible and sustainable environment for worship and community use. Works included significant internal improvements to St Cybi’s Church, alongside the creation of new community facilities at Eglwys y Bedd through a contemporary extension and sensitive upgrades to the historic structure. Environmental enhancements incorporated low-carbon heating systems, improved thermal performance and renewable energy technologies.

As a specialist heritage contractor, GCL is proud to have contributed to the preservation and long-term future of this remarkable landmark, ensuring that it continues to serve both its congregation and the wider community for generations to come.

Sad to hear of the passing of Sir Donald Insall RWA. 1926-2026. He made enormous contributions to architecture and historic environment.

I had the honour of presenting him with the AYA Architect of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024, when he was only a cool 98. The secret is, I may have nominated him as well.

His acceptance speech was very graceful, where he stated, ‘the LIFETIME part I am guilty of, but the ACHIEVEMENTS are those of our team. @insallarch

My full (but brief) citation from the evening below:
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises those who, throughout their careers, have brought outstanding credit, innovation, and recognition to the art of architecture. This year’s recipient is a figure whose name has been synonymous with the conservation, restoration, and celebration of architecture for the past six decades.

The achievements of this year’s winner include the meticulous restoration of Windsor Castle, the sensitive revitalisation of Covent Garden, and a lasting legacy of work at the Palace of Westminster.

His practice has set the standard for when to conserve, when to restore, and when to juxtapose. As a founding Commissioner for English Heritage, his body of work and professional practice has left an indelible mark on the industry and shaped our current attitudes towards sustainability and reuse.

In 2010, he was knighted for his many achievements, and at the remarkable age of 98, he continues to inspire. The recipient of the

2024 Lifetime Achievement Award is Sir Donald Insall

Some photographs from a wonderful Heritage Open Morning at St John’s, Llandudno - sharing traditional skills, giving visitors the chance to try stone carving and explaining the conservation of the tower. Great to work alongside Donald Insall Associates and Aimee McKenzie in bringing the story of this remarkable building to life #buildingconservation #traditionalskills #church

Eighteen months ago, Studio80|six was an idea between two people.

Last week we marked that milestone with clients, contractors and friends who’ve supported the practice along the way.

Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate at our Summer Soirée, and to everyone who has trusted us with their projects so far.

The Grade II* listed CAMELLIA HOUSE (1812) at Wentworth Woodhouse is described by Dr Christopher Webster in his new book as a ‘handsome’ orangery.

The original building on this site was a tea house constructed for the first Marchioness of Rockingham in 1738 which was extended as an orangery by the York based architectural practice of Watson and Pritchett in 1812 to house a collection of rare camellias arriving from China.

This design is almost certainly by Charles Watson (1771-1836).

The camellia house is a fine neo-classical design in an ashlar sandstone front facade with brick returns. The single storey building has a 3:3:3 configuration with the central 3 bays breaking forward with four Roman ionic columns flanking full height casements. The outer bays also feature full height casements but are interspersed with Roman Ionic pilasters - doubled at each end. The balustrade originally featured carved statues and ornaments.

It's a beautifully balanced composition that takes advantage of the elevated south aspect of the terrace.

After lying derelict for more than 50 years the Camellia House underwent a £5 million pound restoration project led by @insallarch. In 2024 the completed project was the winner of the 2024 @thegeorgiangroup architectural award in the Reuse of A Georgian Building category.

Dr Webster’s book on the life and work of the architect Charles Watson is available to pre-order now: link in bio for pdf flyer or by emailing john@johnhudsonpublishing.com directly.

Fundraising target reached - thank you 🫶

We are pleased to report that work will soon be getting underway to restore the South Tower at @wentworth_woodhouse. We’ve reached our fundraising target, and we’re thrilled to have 937 individual Landmark supporters and charitable trusts supporting our plans to create a new Landmark for two within this magnificent setting. Thank you to everybody who supported our appeal and enabled us to reach this exciting milestone.

We’re delighted to be working again with Dobson Construction of Ilkley, who were the contractors for Landmark’s recent, award-winning restoration of Calverley Old Hall in West Yorkshire, as well as with heritage architects Donald Insall Associates @insallarch, with whom we have previously collaborated on projects including the restorations of Llwyn Celyn and The Grange.

One of the key challenges in restoring the South Tower will be the reinstatement of the intricate decorative ceiling of the parlour, which was lost to water ingress in the mid-20th century. We are therefore very happy to be joining forces once more with Master Plasterer @philipgaches and his team. Philip previously worked with Landmark on the interior plasterwork at Cobham Dairy in Kent, and together we are drawing up the detailed designs for the ceiling at the South Tower.

With our team now in place, we’re all set for work to begin on site this autumn. We very much look forward to keeping you updated as the project progresses. Head to our website to read more about this beautiful building and our plans for the South Tower.

Book now for the next
BPT X RIBA Bristol and Bath Midweek Monthly talk.

Rammed Earth House with Emaad Damda, Associate and Architect at Tuckey Design Studio.

📅Wednesday September 9th
🕕6pm (doors at 5.30pm)
📍Museum of Bath Architecture
🎟️Tickets £12 via link in bio

Emaad will discuss the design philosophy behind the Rammed Earth House, a newly built homestead in Wiltshire formed from the very ground on which it stands.

The project is an example of unstabilised rammed earth construction, meaning no cement is used in the material mix. It pioneers the use of this ancient building method within the wet British climate while integrating contemporary building services and modern living requirements.

Emaad will explore the challenges, craftsmanship, localised material palette, and level of detail involved in the project, as well as the wider potential for rammed earth to become a legitimate mainstream solution for circular and sustainable design.

Emaad led the studio’s pioneering Rammed Earth House project; a homestead constructed from the very material on which it sits. The project recently received an RIBA Regional Award, with judges describing it as ‘a building that demonstrates how architecture can inhabit a place with warmth, intelligence and grace, offering a phenomenological experience of exceptional depth.’
