A History of Federal Street:

Federal Street in South Philly has a lot more history than most people realize. It was laid out in the late 1700s as a new street, and its name likely came from its connection to federal-era institutions near the river rather than a person. By the early 1800s, it ran all the way to the Delaware and was part of a working waterfront full of wharves, warehouses, and shipping.

Over time, Federal became a street of layers: the Mikveh Israel burial ground at 11th and Federal, curb markets like the one at 16th and Federal, schools at 5th, 12th, and 23rd, the PECO substation at 6th, the police station at 20th, and later Capitolo Playground on the old Lafayette Cemetery site. It’s also part of South Philly crime lore, with Tyrone Everett’s 1977 shooting at 2710 Federal among the street’s darker stories.

Federal Street isn’t just a road — it’s a whole South Philly timeline.

Send this to someone from Federal Street!
