Carolyn Lazard’s film ‘Fiction Contract’, 2025, made its international film festival debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th. The film has also been selected for the 63rd New York Film Festival, where it will be screened at Lincoln Center on October 4th and 5th. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artist. Tickets are on sale now – link in bio.

‘Fiction Contract’ documents a childbirth simulation at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York. The simulation was facilitated by The Maternal Mortality Reduction Program (MMRP), who trains medical professionals through complex childbirth simulations across all five boroughs of New York. New York City Health + Hospitals selected an all-black team of administrators, midwives, doctors, and nurses for the simulation, which was performed with and by Jada, a black birthing mannequin who can simulate different complex childbirth scenarios. In 2020, as part of a comprehensive plan to “eliminate disparities in maternal mortality between Black and White women,” the Deblasio administration earmarked funds to incentivize medical mannequin manufacturers to produce mannequins with brown skin. Prior to 2020, almost all medical mannequins were white.

The term “fiction contract” refers to the mutual agreement among simulation participants. In this enactment – which itself may constitute a social contract for performance – the simulation scenario is established as a constructed, but immersive environment. Participants agree to engage with the scenario as if it were real, while remaining aware that it is not.

Red (2021) bathes the viewer in red light. The screen flickers and changes color. A corner of white is occasionally revealed. The artist achieved a strobe effect by placing their thumb over the iPhone camera. Integral to the work is a trigger warning for the fluctuating light levels inside the room, deliberately placed on a wall outside it. The work responds to the historical legacy of avant-garde and structuralist filmmaking that deconstructed the material aspects of film. Here, however, Lazard considers the “crip” sensibility within such histories and practices that were perhaps always integral but undefined, unacknowledged, and ill-articulated. Red responds quite specifically to a legacy of experimental film by artists like Tony Conrad, Peter Kubelka, and Paul Sharits. Lazard has noted that Tony Conrad’s The Flicker (1966) included a note advising that a doctor be on hand when the film was shown because it could trigger photosensitive epilepsy. It appears that access, perhaps in less well-intentioned ways, was built into these traditions as an exercise in posturing.
Lazard, however, reads these ideas in good faith but lends a remedial edge to the practice and thinks through infrastructures of access as aesthetics. Red was made during the COVID-19 pandemic and is very much informed by the technologies and environments that were available to work with at the time. The structural proclivity of this work speaks to that moment when the social constrictions that were placed on everyone were all too familiar to those already living with chronic conditions or immunocompromised status. As with much of Lazard’s work, Red foregrounds access as an embedded condition of making and not an accommodation to normative experience. In this sense it looks to the past, and to a generation of visionary artists who offer continual inspiration, but reflects a better understanding of who culture and the arts are for. Hers is a gesture of intergenerational kinship, constitutive of more equitable futures.

“Homage: Queer Lineages on Video”, curated by Rattanamol Singh Johal, is on view at the Wallach Art Gallery from June 27–October 19, 2025.

Wallach Art Gallery is pleased to announce “Homage: Queer lineages on video” opens June 27, 2025, and features work by Dineo Seshee Bopape, Tony Cokes, Carolyn Lazard, Kang Seung Lee, P. Staff, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Curated by Rattanamol Singh Johal, the exhibition presents works by contemporary artists who pay tribute to significant cultural figures and resonant histories. Their works, all made over the last two decades, explore how lens- and time-based media have enabled artists to articulate desiring and melancholic modes of relating across generations and contexts.

Intervening in commemorative genres of image making—including portraiture and documentary—through performative acts, selective appropriation, and imaginative staging, these works produce queer forms of kinship.

All the works in the exhibition are drawn from Akeroyd Collection, the moving image facet of the Shane Akeroyd Art Collection.

Exhibition Dates:

June 27–October 19, 2025

Gallery Hours:

Wednesdays through Sundays, 12noon–6:00pm
