PALACIO by Santiago Insignares Martínez (@insignaresart), at SGR Galería (@sgrgaleria) in Bogotá. (PART II)

Santiago Insignares Martínez’s distinctive ceramic worlds come together through play. Here, he takes us inside the physical process behind his sculptures.

Using pre-made ceramic components—and for this installation, a burnout technique—he assembles architectural forms piece by piece, allowing each structure to evolve organically. The result is a practice where spontaneity, material experimentation, and memory become inseparable. Drawing on the instinctive act of constructing shelters—whether a childhood blanket fort or a makeshift shack—his work explores the fine line between nostalgia and precarity.

PALACIO by Santiago Insignares Martínez (@insignaresart), at SGR Galería (@sgrgaleria) in Bogotá

Colombian artist Santiago Insignares Martínez’ provocative solo exhibition, PALACIO, investigates the kinship between a childhood blanket fort and a cambuche, or the improvised shelter made by the houseless or displaced.

Constructed from candy-colored ceramic “building blocks,” sagging porcelain blankets, branches, and rope, his immersive installation blurs the line between play and survival, nostalgia and precarity.

By collapsing these seemingly opposite worlds into one vibrant landscape, PALACIO invites us to reflect on the primordial instinct to build shelter, real or imagined, out of whatever is at hand, and to reconsider the assumptions we make about home, privilege, and the architectures we build.
