What’s your why?

Here’s one of mine: up there with the most inspiring role models a younger brother could have.

Growing up with Asperges is tough –bullying so rough that it almost broke our family (it probably didn’t help that Dad was neurodivergent too).

Jacko bounced between jobs after high-school, before landing on a banana farm, where he grinded it out for 7 years in the FNQ humidity. Respect the hustle.

Wanting to do something different, J-Farns attained numerous tickets, certificates and machinery licenses after work and on weekends – he tried and failed (and tried again) to pursue something better.

Fast forward a few years and the OG Farnsy moves to the city from our small hometown and works 3 gigs: security guard across multiple companies, forklift operator in warehousing, and delivery driving with Doordash and Menulog.

He does this all while training in the gym, learning BJJ and riding his fucking road-bicycle all over FNQ.

This mans work ethic cannot be matched.

Still thinking “how could I be doing better” – Jack invested in himself, signed on with TAFE to do a Cert 3 in Educational Support and is loving it. He hopes to become a teacher aide and get back into school settings to help young people, even after his overtly negative experiences.

From my older brother I have learnt three main lessons: don’t be afraid to be yourself, don’t be afraid to go your own way, and most importantly - don’t ever fucking give up.

I used to wish Jacko was a bit more like the other kids - that way I wouldn’t have been playing by myself at home so much. Ambling around the rainforest cutting at tress pretending I was fighting zombies.

But the older I get, the more I realise he was the role model I needed.

The older I get, the more I realise that the best parts of me I got from him:

Work hard, be yourself, stay fit, never give up, give everybody the time of day and go your own way.

Having a brother with Asperges can be a stressful experience at times. You worry about what the future holds - how people treat them when you're not around and how they'll function when you or your family are no longer there to support them. Those worries, however, are mixed with intense feelings of happiness and pride. You see some of the things in life that we consider part of growing up can be quite hard for someone with Asperges. Things like socialising with new people, driving a car, holding down a job or living by yourself. @jack.farnsworth has achieved all of these things and more. In his first half marathon race he finished in the top 20% despite slowing down for photos and chats along the way. He has learnt how to fly a a small aircraft and when asked if he'll pursue his license responds "na costs too much, practice flights are nice enough". He can walk into a busy pub without knowing who he'll meet and strike up conversation with whoever shoots him eye contact - something which can be unnerving to most people let alone someone with Asperges. He's setting goals for himself, the most notable being mountain climbing through Nepal in 2020. He's built a reputation for himself around town as a fit, friendly and funny young man who's always up for a chat. His social skills are constantly improving and he always displays a willingness to adapt and learn - understanding sarcasm is one we're still working on. -
So happy belated birthday to the most energetic, enthusiastic and positive person I know. I'm excited to see what your future holds - the fact that you're already looking forward to being "wacky uncle Jack" to my kids both warms my heart and scares me little. A big shoutout goes to all those in Innisfail, Cairns or Brisbane that have ever given my brother the time of day - it is from you that he has learnt to be the respectful and motivated young man that he is today. -
