LATERALE TORNA ALL’HORCYNUS FESTIVAL ✨

🎬 I film in programma:

• "Tomorrow" (Bo Vloors) · "Murmur" (Jan Locus & Stijn Demeulenaere) · "Epoca es poca cosa" (Ignacio Tamarit) · "Configurations" (James Edmonds)

• "Remaining Silent" (Yanbin Zhao) · "Fertile" (Terry Silvester) · "Trace of a silent tear" (Alena Starostina & Ivan Nikolaev) · "The Edge of the world" (Kate Saragaço-Gomes)

• "Obsolescence" (Nuno Braumann) · "The End" (Richard Wiebe) · "Earth FM" (Philip Rabalais) · "Prima Luce" (Richard Ashrowan)

“Memoria” about “Memorial” in Berlin. Part 2

What is Memoria?

Memoria is a documentary play about memory and the work of the International Memorial. Written by Nana Grinstein @nanagrinstein and directed by Anastasia Patlay @anastasia_patlay , the play follows three historical periods: the Stalinist terror of the 1930s, the late 1980s when Memorial was founded to preserve the memory of political repression, and the present day.

These timelines are connected through the life of Carola Neher, one of Bertolt Brecht’s greatest actresses and the original Polly in The Threepenny Opera. After fleeing Nazi Germany, she sought refuge in the Soviet Union, where she was arrested, imprisoned in the GULAG and died of typhus in 1942.

Alongside Carola Neher, the play brings together the voices of Bertolt Brecht and Irina Scherbakowa, one of Memorial’s founders, whose research helped uncover the story of Neher’s fate and reunite her son with the history that had been erased.

Following the outbreak of the full invasion of Ukraine, director Anastasia Patlay left Russia and became the first artist to join the Artists at Risk residency at Brechthaus Augsburg. During the residency, she created a new version of Memoria, which premiered at the Augsburg Brechtfestival in 2024.

Presenting Memoria at Berliner Ensemble @blnensemble is deeply symbolic. It returns Carola Neher’s story to the stage of the theatre founded by Bertolt Brecht, her friend and collaborator. By weaving together different historical periods, the play reveals disturbing echoes between the past and the present, reminding us that the work of preserving memory remains as urgent as ever.

“Memoria” about “Memorial” in Berlin. Part 1

At the end of June, we presented the performance “Memoria” at the Berliner Ensemble @blnensemble

Originally written by Nana Grinstein and directed by Anastasia Patlay, “Memoria” premiered in Moscow in 2022. Shortly afterwards, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the production was banned from further performances.

Bringing “Memoria” to the Berliner Ensemble was more than just another performance. It was an opportunity to bring a powerful story across borders and generations to a stage that felt deeply connected to its themes — we will share more about this in our next post. It was also a rare and valuable opportunity to bring together audiences, artists, partners, and friends.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening.

The characters exist on two temporal levels: 1986 and 2016. In 1986, Alexey, Marina, Sergey, and Valery are twelve-year-old students. In 2016, they are forty-two years old, seemingly transported back to their former boarding school, where everything — except them — appears frozen in time or perhaps has never changed at all.

The dynamic between teachers and pupils is shaped by subtle yet persistent undercurrents of violence and dominance. As children, the pupils may not have recognized the harmful nature of their upbringing. But upon returning as adults, a dissonance becomes palpable — something in the structure of communication and subordination feels deeply wrong. And yet only one character dares to resist the existing order. The others adapt — out of fear of punishment or exclusion — unable to defend one another or take a stand.

There is no overt violence — only an eerie atmosphere and a rupture in reality, a “glitch” that signals that something is not right.

Black Box examines how unresolved historical trauma continues to shape present-day life.
