What a wonderful time I’m having at the Torbay Literary Festival. Three events at the Palace Theatre, Paignton, yesterday: a talk about War Babies with my wonderful co-writer, Simon Robinson; a writing workshop; and a riotous evening on stage with Helen Lederer. All this followed by drinks in the bar with festival director Ben Tisdall, concert pianist @nicholasmccarthyofficial and the incomparable @mrcarringtonhome

As I’m busy preparing for my @konzerthausberlin debut on Wednesday, I havn’t had chance to post the pics from last week’s BBC Music Magazine Awards. Was so wonderful to celebrate the past years’ fantastic recordings that were released and was great to hand out the ‘Newcomer’ award to young talented pianist Jan Schulmeister, who also treated us to some sublime Scriabin during the evening. Congratulations to Jan! Lovely to see so many friends and colleagues too 🎵🎹🥂#awards #pianistlife #classicalmusic

⭐ 2026 RPS Awards shortlist spotlight ⭐ Nicholas McCarthy – piano

Nicholas McCarthy @nicholasmccarthyofficial is shortlisted for the 2026 RPS Instrumentalist Award. He held the audience rapt at this year’s BBC Proms @bbcradio3 with a powerful rendition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Born without his right hand, Nicholas is only the second one-handed pianist to perform at the Proms – 75 years after Paul Wittgenstein, who commissioned the concerto. His advocacy and commitment to commissioning is furthering the repertoire. He’s also collaborated with @abrsmmusic to expand the piano syllabus for students playing with one hand.

The RPS Instrumentalist Award is kindly supported by @earlymusicshop.

The RPS Awards will be presented live at @southbankcentre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on Thursday 12 March 2026. Join us for an uplifting night celebrating all of the shortlistees and musical achievements nationwide, with live performances and special guests. Book your tickets from just £10 (plus venue fees) via the link in our bio. Royal Philharmonic Society Awards 2026 Shortlist announcement graphic. Boo to Insta’s annoying grid. Here’s nearly all the cover of WAR BABIES, my new non-fiction book with Simon Robinson, out at the beginning of November from Mirror Books. It’s a collection of childhood memories from WW2 - stories of courage, bravery and resilience. It’s an honour to be able to share them. #ww2 #ww2history
