TWO EMPTY – The moment @steereheard and I finished our first pass at WITH THIS RING, we reached out to @accompanymusicals for feedback. She was enthusiastic, but also did the deep dive we hoped for. Lots of great notes, including: “Get a better opening number.” Sam and I jumped into parallel sandboxes, each taking a different path. His version is the one we used. I loved his meta-approach to the six friends and the one missing couple that drives the whole story. This clip is from our @musicalwriters staged reading in Dallas, and features @spadilla1173 & @johnnyb23_, @darnitadellen & @monstershaunster, and @inspiredsarahc & @insta.b.hath.

SELL ME YESTERDAY
Book & Lyrics by @steph.ren_
Music by Michael Matlock

Sell Me Yesterday introduces us to a world where “living in the past” isn’t simply a figure of speech– it’s a literal possibility. Thanks to a drug called Nemo, users are able to relive their happiest memories. Perhaps it’s the intimate connection of an old relationship. Maybe it’s the precious times spent with lost loved ones, or even the simplicity of childhood. With shades of a reverse “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” meets “Severance” with a little bit of “Breaking Bad” thrown in, Sell Me Yesterday features a dynamic contemporary rock score and explores the ways in which memory is an ever-shifting, unreliable force shaped by our tendencies to romanticize the past when we’re unhappy in the present.

Starring Gideon Ethridge, Rickie Jones, Brian Hathaway, Sky Williams, Brigitte Wilson, Marilyn Setu, Joshua Sherman, Jacob Waters, Barbara Catrett and Kelly Wolff.

📆 Sunday, August 9
🚪 Doors open at 5:30

Now that the weekend has come to a close, and I’ve had the chance to rest… now I get to take a moment to reflect.

I have been a part of the annual @musicalwriters festival from the start. Every year, I end the week feeling like my brain is melting, and I could nap for an extra week…. But those are nothing in comparison to the utter joy and artistic fulfillment I get.

I could give you a laundry list of the things I love about supporting new works, but I’ll give you my top 3:

1) I get to pour into other artists. These writers are some of the most brilliant, creative, and kindest humans you’ll ever meet. I love being able to help them see their hard work and dreams come to life. Watching a writer or creative team light up or even weep as they see and hear their own creations up on a stage, sometimes for the very first time, will never get old to me.

2) The community we’ve built is truly something special. I have witnessed people from all walks of life collaborating and supporting one another. This weekend, I watched an outstanding performance of an incredible song from someone that had almost given up on their dreams, and the support from those 4 minutes in a room full of strangers melted away 20 years of trauma. I get to be part of something new coming up that I truly believe is a masterpiece from a table read, alone. I saw writers fall in love with singers and make connections to get those next steps to their dream underway. I’m grateful to be one of them.

3) And selfishly, I get to fill my own bucket in a number of ways. There are few things in this world that bring me more joy or make me feel more like myself than when I get up on a stage and sing. Working with @musicalwriters over the years has brought me so much opportunity - to push myself, showcase my range, collaborate with brilliant humans, build an extended chosen family that spans the world, give back to a beautiful community, perform with dream casts in dream cities, and sing new music that the world deserves to hear.

We train for this event all year. We are making dreams come true. Please continue to support new works!

And writers, keep going. We need you.

IS THIS US? – Here’s the first clip from our recent @musicalwriters staged reading in Dallas. This song occurs in the second act of WITH THIS RING, after our lead couple Fred and Sarah have a blow-out argument. Their six friends all witness the fight (in a meta-Greek-Chorus way) and have been happily choosing sides and heckling while the argument raged. But the moment it ends with harsh words and hurt feelings, they consider the mirror it presents to their own lives. I originally conceived this song as a jaunty, satirical ditty. @steereheard went a different way entirely with the music and unearthed so much more. These six performers had one week to rehearse the whole show under @accompanymusicals’s ace direction. Kudos to @inspiredsarahc, @insta.b.hath, @darnitadellen, @monstershaunster, @spadilla1173, and @johnnyb23_!
