Another way to celebrate the book birthday of THE NEW CAT is WITH AN ACTUAL NEW CAT!

Swipe to see who is in the carrier! 👀

And say hello to Okra!

Also, this was totally not planned but this was the day her foster mom could drop her off with us -- crazy kismet!

Okra was found in a backyard in San Jose by a TNR group who decided she was too pretty to release back into the wild. #adoptdontshop

💫 THE NEW CAT has received a Kirkus star! Congratulations, Stephanie V. W. Lucianovic (@grubreport) and Chris Park (@chris_d_park)!

⭐ “Life lessons learned from an older (and furrier) sibling. Hunca Munca has it pretty good as a housecat. Then, one day, his family brings home the “New Cat” (in fact, a human infant). He stinks, has very little fur, and can’t even purr. Even so, the feline comes to care for the baby, determined to teach him everything that he needs to know . . . A twist on both new baby and mortality of pet tales, all the stronger for the merger.”

Better late, as usual, than never: These two amazing books came out last week!

A BOY CALLED HERO by Marie Miranda Cruz is a middle grade novel that could've been written specifically for my past self, or perhaps for my tween clone. Our titular Hero travels back in time to 1892, when his family is resisting Spanish rule in the Philippines by distributing copies of a banned book. Amidst a ton of intrigue and high stakes, Hero discovers the many quiet ways that ordinary people can make a lasting mark on their world.

WITNESS, shepherded into existence by Shaina Olmanson and Carol Hinz along with coeditors Ari Tison and Ty Chapman, is a YA poetry collection about policing, being policed, and imagining a world with a very different relationship to policing. Thanks to an incredible lineup of contributors, every poem is a unique invitation to think deeply and feel freely about a topic where "it's complicated" is too often the end of the conversation instead of the beginning. This book is the beginning of, I hope, many fruitful conversations. I can take no credit for it, so that makes me a completely unbiased source!

(Whereas when it comes to HERO, I should be trusted due to my intimate knowledge of it as the editor!)

HERO cover art by Marx Fidel and book design by Athena Currier; WITNESS cover and interior art by Damon Davis, and book design by Danielle Carnito. Celebrating one year of Rewriting the Rules, illustrated by the talented @joseebisaillon —
and what a wild year it has been celebrating Dr. @kathleen.friel together both in-person AND virtually!

It has been an immense joy to watch so many readers around the country and even world delight in your incredible story. Every letter we receive and share with one another newly moves me and gives me hope. I’m excited to hopefully birth many books into this world, but I’m honored that this is my first. There are truly not enough children’s books advocating for disability rights, showcasing stars and scientists with disabilities, and especially, cerebral palsy. And certainly not enough sharing the neuroscience behind it all. Kathleen’s story is so powerful for all kids and their grownups. I’m grateful for the opportunity to watch and the privilege to experience its reception.

Thank you forever, Kathleen, for trusting me to share your story!! ❤️

Thank you to forces of nature editors @instachinz and @leilasalesbooks and art director @carkneetoe @lernerbooks for making this book shine to its highest potential! And to @houseofrosen @gabycabezut @seymour.agency for your unwavering support and making this dream come true!
Thank you to every invaluable writing critique partner, championing friend, my family who has not missed a single event with me, awards committee, librarian, and especially, kid reader!!

What an amazing ride that is thankfully only continuing!!!
(Maine and RI readers, please don’t forget to vote in your state children’s book awards!)

Ever since I saw the 2022 Original Art Show at @soi128 it has been a dream of mine to be part of it, which is why I am still a little bit in excited disbelief that Whose Tree Is This has been selected for this year's show!

This little book has everything that makes me the illustrator I am: poetry, leaf litter, textures, bugs; so of course this is the spread I'll be putting in the show! The original gouache painting will be up at the incomparable Museum of Illustration in NYC October 31–January 30, 2027 alongside just so many other beautiful works.

I am so so grateful to the incomparable author @marilynsingerbooks, our wonderful publisher @lernerbooks (and especially to @carkneetoe and @instachinz for letting me spam them with bugs), and my incredible agent @agentnaomidavis for letting me spam them with both bugs AND exclamation points. I'm so excited!!!
