Played a few “family friendly” rounds of PHASE 10 - Christmas Edition

Of the seven of us that played, three completed Phase 5, three completed Phase 4, and one completed Phase 3 before we paused… I suggested the three top dogs (of which I was one) play a Championship Round in the near future to determine who takes all the marbles!!

Good times have been had this Christmas!

Who will remember you when you’re gone? That’s what came to my mind when I saw this interview Nikki Giovanni did. In it she mentions a man who I also mention in a short story that takes place in the African American town that Nikki and I are from.

Nikki: “I walked to school every day, which I liked. We had Neal’s Grocery Store—he was a veteran—when we lived on Jackson Street…” (Nikki Giovanni: Growing Up in Lincoln Heights’, 2011 interview with Kathy Y. Wilson, CityBeat Magazine)

Doug: “… There were many stores in Lincoln Heights besides Mr. Ralph’s and Mr. Neal’s. There was Smith’s Five and Dime, Anderson’s Drug Store, Moxley’s or one of the stores that lined Steffens Street, which was the main street in town…” (Doug Cooper Spencer, ‘Summer’s Chord’ in ‘Gather the Bones’ short stories collection)

Both are recollections of Mr. Neal’s grocery store. During that time, Nikki lived on Jackson Street, and I lived on Medosh Ave, a few blocks down from the Isley family (of The Isley Brothers) during the 1950s.

I don’t have any photos of Mr. Neal (I used a stock photo), but he is so vibrant in my memory—a man with a dark handsome face crowned with wavy silver hair, and a calm and reassuring voice. Looking back, I understand that it was a voice that was full of confidence.

Mr. Neal passed away many years ago, but he lived on in the memories of Nikki, me and I’m sure others who grew up in my hometown. I bet Mr. Neal never thought that of the many kids who came to his store, two of them would grow up to become writers and memorialize him in ink.

It’s time we introduce the man behind our current window illustration — Randy Wilson aka @instafunk1960!

Randy taught @_tessaclark fashion illustration at @uc_daap, where he continues to teach fashion drawing. His signature style is easily recognizable by students and those in the industry, and we’re honored to have his work grace our windows. Even better, he’s a resident of OTR, our beloved neighborhood!

We spent the afternoon interviewing Randy, which we’ll feature on our journal at the beginning of March.

Stay tuned — Randy will be in store this Spring to live draw ✍🏾
