Do you ever feel like making art is impossible? There’s so many things that get in the way, from the mundane little things to big life changes like an illness or new parenthood to global catastrophes. As I’ve navigated some really big changes of my own over the last few years living with an energy-limiting illness, I’ve been wondering how other people adapt their creative practices when it feels tough to make art. So I asked! 14 people responded, and here is a 46-page collection of advice, encouragement, and examples of work created during struggle. You can order a copy for $10 @ the shop link in my (@__kel.ley__ ) bio - shipping is $5 or you can do free pick up.

Also looking for distro spots - so if anyone is interested or knows a place that might be, lmk!

Contributors include: Alejandra (Tobar Alatriz), allison anne, Brighton McCormick, Christi Furnas, Drew Maude-Griffin, Emmett Winship Ramstad, Anna Marie Shogren, jamie kubat, John Schuerman, Katrina Knutson, Kelley Meister, Martha Bird, May Ling Kopecky, Samael Leopold-Sullivan, and Zoe Cinel.

Also a huge thank you to @erinbrockmeier for so much help with printing and assembling these!! Absolutely could not have done it without you! 💕

💖Keep making art!💖

Collaboration is a central piece of my work- both with my participants and other artists. Collabs bring new perspectives, ways of working, and vibrancy that have invigorated my practice. In 2016, an artist I had deeply respected, Nirmal Raja (@nirmal.raja) reached out to collaborate on an idea she had. We ended up working together on two series over several years exploring place, identity, and belonging through photographs, video works, and an audio archive.

In 2022 with great admiration of Minneapolis-based artist John Schuerman’s (@instinctmpls) walking practice, I asked if I could join him on one of his walks. Through conversation, we landed on using the rickshaw as a strange tool to consider through subversive use. We inverted the traditional power dynamics created by the rickshaw in our 8-mile snowy walk by a rotation of each symbiotically pulling the other. The work examines care, physical endurance, and reciprocal exchange in this 3-hour walk in Milwaukee. In the summer of 2023, we did a sister walk in Minneapolis.

Titles:
1. Downtown Milwaukee - Sari 18. 2017 from the series, Reaching through 5 ½ yards, 8497 miles
2. Untitled I, 2017 from the series What is recorded | What is remembered

From the experimental studio of John Schuerman arrives this forces of nature artwork involving melted ice. Wielded by Mother Nature and a large ice formation, Schuerman applied acrylic and watercolor pigments that slowly melted over time creating this large scale ice fascination on high quality paper, a cool collaboration on display through Feb 25, 2024. "The Fall", 33"x24", acrylic, watercolor on paper, $1450
