To some, there’s beauty in raw simplicity. Recognised for its exposed materials, imposing forms, geometric shapes, and stripped-back aesthetic, Brutalism lets the building itself do the talking. For the architecture-curious who like it bold, bare, and boxy, here’s our guide to where to admire brutalist architecture in Bangkok. Tap the link in bio for the full list, building-hopper.

The first photo shows the kitchen of @interluke. The second shows it when the flat was new in 1968. Spot the difference.

There are still quite a few original Barbican kitchens, and Luke’s is impeccable. Nearly 60 years old and it looks almost as it did when installed, even down to the original Creda oven, a definite rarity. Only the washing machine gives the game away.

In 1968 these kitchens must have seemed like science fiction.

Architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon brought in yacht builders Brooke Marine to help design them: they were used to designing for small spaces.

So what was so radical?

- Floor-to-ceiling glass and fibreglass units, a material still very new
- Stainless-steel worktops with integrated sinks. Way ahead of its time.
- Eye-level ovens and fridges, long before either became commonplace.
- Individual hob rings integrated into the worktop, only likely to be found in a high-end kitchen today.
- Under-cupboard lighting to light the work surfaces.
- In some flats, built-in dishwashers, a cutting-edge luxury.
- The Garchey waste-disposal system, which dealt with most kitchen refuse, even glass and cans.
- And those huge modernist serving hatches connecting kitchen and dining area.

But there is a paradox. This kitchen of the future was the first part of a Barbican flat to become outdated. Why? Laundry was not designed into the kitchen at all, seemingly on the assumption that residents would use laundrettes or have washing collected. Perhaps there was a class assumption in that too.
What they didn’t foresee was how completely, in just a few years, the washing machine would become a standard part of the British kitchen. Once residents wanted one, or indeed wanted a new oven, these tightly integrated kitchens built around old imperial measurements, were notoriously difficult to adapt.
More small appliances also meant more sockets were needed; some original kitchens had only two.

But people did manage to adapt the kitchen to these changing times, albeit not that easily.

And the style of the kitchen looks as modern today as it ever did. Extraordinary really, given just how old the design is.
